Genesis 5
The Antediluvian Genealogy
The mainstream and traditional frameworks differ on this passage. We show both, side by side.
| Framework | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mainstream scholarly | ~6th century BCE | Priestly source (P), composed in or after Babylonian exile. Structurally derived from ANE king-lists (notably Sumerian King List); Priestly editor reshaped that template for Israel's distinctive theology of one creator-deity, monogamous patriarchs, single line of descent leading to Noah. |
| JW.org / traditional | c. 1513 BCE | Mosaic; literal-historical biography of ten patriarchs from Adam to Noah, with literal lifespans. Used to calculate young earth (~6,000 years) and date the Flood. |
Full translation in /home/claude/giv-prologue/day-005-genesis-5.md. Critical points: 5:1 sēper tôlᵉdōt formula (Priestly editor citing source document), 5:1-2 humanity/ʾĀdām collective and equal naming, 5:3 image-and-likeness genealogically transmitted (foundation for 9:6 murder prohibition), the contested lifespan numbers (MT vs. LXX vs. Samaritan diverge significantly — Septuagint adds ~100 years for early patriarchs), Enoch in the seventh position parallel to En-men-dur-ana (the Sumerian seventh-pre-flood-king who received divine revelation), Enoch "walked with the ʾĕlōhîm" with definite article preserved (plural "divine beings"), Enoch at 365 years matching solar calendar, Enoch did NOT die (only patriarch without the death-refrain), Sethite Lamech's proto-messianic naming of Noah (first eschatological hope in Hebrew Bible).
Translator's notes covering: 5:1 sēper tôlᵉdōt [REFRAME] (Priestly editor citing source); 5:1-2 humanity ʾĀdām collective and equal; 5:3 bidmûtô kᵉṣalmô [REFRAME] (image genealogically transmitted); the lifespans [CRUX] (MT/LXX/Samaritan all differ — no single agreed-upon chronology); 5:22, 24 hāʾĕlōhîm with definite article preserved as "the ʾĕlōhîm" (plural-divine-beings reading); 5:24 wᵉʾênennû kî-lāqaḥ [REFRAME] [CRUX] (Enoch did not die — lāqaḥ same verb as Elijah's translation); 5:29 yᵉnaḥămēnû/Nōaḥ [REFRAME] proto-messianic.
Pseudo-Jonathan on 5:24 is the most consequential Targumic expansion in the Prologue: "Enoch served before YHWH... ascended to the firmament by the Memra of YHWH. And He called his name Metatron, the Great Scribe." Enoch becomes Metatron, the most exalted angel in rabbinic mystical tradition (the "Lesser YHWH" of Hagigah 15a's "two powers in heaven" controversy). Pre-Christian Jewish prehistory of Christological human-divine fusion. Pseudo-Jonathan on 5:29 makes Lamech's expectation explicitly messianic. Onkelos restrains: "Enoch walked in fear of YHWH" without the Metatron expansion.
5:1 biblos geneseōs — Matthew 1:1 consciously echoes ("Biblos geneseōs Iēsou Christou"). Jesus' genealogy framed as another toledot of Adam. 5:22, 24 euērestēsen tō theō — "was pleasing to God" (Hebrews 11:5 cites this LXX reading). 5:24 kai ouch hēurisketo — "and he was not found." LXX numbers systematically larger than MT for early patriarchs — Eastern Orthodox computations historically used LXX yielding different dates than Protestant Ussher.
TIER 1: Sumerian King List with eight pre-flood kings reigning 18,600-43,200 years. Structural parallel to Genesis 5 unmistakable. The seventh king on the Sumerian list (En-men-dur-ana of Sippar) is famous for receiving divine revelation — corresponds positionally to Enoch in seventh position. THIS IS TOO SPECIFIC TO BE COINCIDENCE. The Genesis editor knew the convention. Berossus (3rd c. BCE) lists 10 pre-flood kings — same count as Genesis. Atrahasis preserves shorter pre-flood lifespans. TIER 2: Egyptian pre-dynastic kings (Palermo Stone, Turin King List); Persian/Avestan Yima. TIER 3: Hesiod's Five Ages, Indian Yugas, Chinese Three Sovereigns/Five Emperors — decline-from-primordial-longevity is genuinely cross-cultural.
Sumerian King List multiple copies dating from ~2000 BCE. Berossus's Babyloniaca (3rd c. BCE). Aramaic 1 Enoch fragments at Qumran (4Q201-212, ~200 BCE) prove Enoch traditions actively read in Hasmonean Judaism. Ge'ez full 1 Enoch preserved in Ethiopian Orthodox canon. Josephus (Antiquities 1.3.4) has Enoch ascending to God; the Sethite line preserving astronomy on inscribed pillars one of which exists in Siriad. Philo (Posterity of Cain) reads Enoch allegorically.
Confidence: sēper tôlᵉdōt (high), humanity collective and equal (high), image genealogically transmitted (high), lifespans (high data; no judgment on interpretation), hāʾĕlōhîm plural-divine-beings (medium-high — genuine grammatical ambiguity), 5:24 Enoch did not die (high), 5:29 proto-messianic (high lexical, medium-high theological). Reception History — THE ENOCH EXPLOSION. 1 Enoch composite (Watchers, Parables, Astronomical Book, Dreams, Epistle), 2 Enoch (Slavonic), 3 Enoch (Sefer Hekhalot — Enoch as Metatron). Aramaic Qumran fragments. Jude 14-15 quotes 1 Enoch 1:9 as PROPHECY (NT book treats extra-canonical book as scripture). Hebrews 11:5 cites LXX. Luke 3:37-38 traces Jesus's lineage through Enoch. Tertullian, Justin, Athenagoras, Irenaeus, Clement all engaged 1 Enoch. Augustine rejects (City of God XV.23) — turning point for Western neglect. Eastern Christianity preserved canonical. James Bruce 1773 rediscovery. Qumran 1947 confirms Second Temple centrality. Ussher's 4004 BCE on MT numbers. Margaret Barker's Temple Theology school. Heiser's Unseen Realm.
