TRUMP / JUDGE REYES / EAST POTOMAC PARK
"The judge on the case is a crazed lunatic whose courthouse tapes will reveal, may be insane? ... Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY!"
"I mean, there is no universe in which all of this just coincidentally happened at the same time. There just is not." — — Judge Ana C. Reyes, October 19, on the 430 trees cut over the holiday weekend
Two words got the headlines. The docket has the story. In June he posted that after touring the course with Tom Fazio and the Interior Secretary "it was determined that... we will build one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World," built "through the Department of the Interior," work starting September 1. In July his lawyers told the court no final agency action had occurred while conceding Interior and NPS were trying to meet that schedule — "From the President mouth to their ears, Your Honor." The judge declined to enjoin, explicitly because she did not want contempt proceedings, and said she would trust the government to act in good faith "until proven otherwise." Over Columbus Day weekend they cut nearly 430 trees. Her TRO opinion notes the cutting came weeks after he asked Interior to cut them and "not, say, any other time in the last seven years," and that this "asks rather a lot of coincidence." At the October 12 emergency hearing the official who submitted the plan testified there was no urgency whatsoever — cut tomorrow or in a month, same to the government. Then Monday: DOJ asked her to recuse for bias, she refused, he called her insane at 6 a.m., Interior deputy chief of staff Greg Wischer testified two hours before 100-plus people including uniformed Park Service staff, DOJ told the court the course is not closing, and the acting NPS director said she did not know about the November 15 closure date her own agency is supposed to execute. He posted the renderings Sunday. She ended the day telling the room her mother and brother were calling about death threats. One government, two accounts of the same project, and only the one under oath contradicts the President.
