TRUMP / ABC
"Fraud like this should mean a revocation of their licenses. They use our public, multi-billion dollar in value, airways for absolutely no money."
"ABC cannot ignore the consequences of any decision that might anger the Administration or the FCC Chairman." — — Disney/ABC federal complaint against the FCC, August 18
Two networks declined to carry a primetime address live and the president said they should lose their licenses. Every outlet ran it, with experts explaining he cannot legally do that — which is true, and which is why it was the safe story. A month later Disney sued the FCC and told a federal court that ABC livestreamed the July 16 speech, something it "ordinarily would not have done," because its licenses were exposed. A network documented its own chilling effect in a sworn filing, and it landed as procedural color in a media-business story. The lever was never revocation. It was renewal timing — eight stations ordered to file years early with thirty days to do it. Loud thing that could not happen: covered. Quiet thing that already had: buried.
