But here's what actually happened. In January of this year, the U.S. captured Maduro. Trump's administration installed Delcy Rodriguez as the new government. Lifted sanctions on her. And now Trump is bragging about his personal approval ratings in a country under American occupation.

HAST That's the structure most coverage missed. A sitting president is popular in a government the United States installed and controls. The joke only works if you don't look at the predicate.

KELI Right. So the counter-read here is simple. Newsrooms will treat this as a vanity moment — colorful Trump being Trump. The real story is that a U.S.-backed government in Caracas is polling well for the man who put it there, and he's publicly comfortable enough with that outcome to reference it on camera. What to watch in the hours ahead: whether State Department officials walk back his comment, or whether they let it stand. If it stands, it signals the administration sees the Rodriguez government as stable enough to brag about. If there's a walk-back, it means they're worried about the optics of openly occupying Venezuela. Either way, you'll see the answer from the podium.

HAST On a different front — Guinea. Thirty people killed when a landfill collapsed in Conakry after heavy overnight rains. The waste mound gave way and buried nearby homes. Rescue crews are still pulling bodies out of the rubble.

KELI Back stateside — nearly ninety thousand people told to evacuate as a wildfire closes in on Reno, Nevada. The fire has burned around ten thousand five hundred acres and is completely uncontained. Authorities are moving people out ahead of what could be the largest push yet if weather shifts.

HAST The IndyCar race in Washington, D.C. this past weekend — Trump dropped the green flag in front of what looked like a packed National Mall. Video shows him waving it back and forth like a conductor, Melania smiling next to him. The broadcast called it "energetic." It's tracking as a viral moment, but mostly as a visual.
