KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Heavy hour. A researcher dead in Siberia, the Kremlin locked down, and we're looking at what Moscow's actually protecting. Let's start there.

KELI From our Ground News desk: Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment over one hundred times in a closed hearing before a House committee last month. Rand Paul was asking the questions. Fauci said, under advice of counsel, he would not answer. Paul responded by calling him unhinged. The press covered the grudge match — the personal animosity led the stories, the Fifth Amendment count ran like a box score. What didn't get explained: Fauci received a pre-emptive pardon that stopped at January 2025. It does not cover 2026 perjury. That's exactly why the Fifth was available and exactly why it was used. A mechanism almost nobody in the coverage named. In 2022, Fauci answered similar questions and could not name the study. In 2026, he does not answer at all. It's a complete arc on the record, and it lost to a grudge match.

HAST The counter-read here is structural, not tribal. The press will keep selling the Paul-versus-Fauci show. What to watch: whether the committee chairman's contempt referral to the Department of Justice gets prosecuted, and if so, whether discovery forces the pardon question into open court. That's your checkable test in the coming weeks. If DOJ moves fast and quiet, or doesn't move, that tells you something about the pardon's real scope.

KELI Staying overseas. A worker at a research laboratory in Siberia died last week. The Kremlin has not released a cause. International health officials are concerned about suspected pneumonic plague. Moscow has a documented pattern — industrial disasters, health emergencies, accidents — all managed through official secrecy that can last for years. The lab's location, the nature of the work, the timing of the death, and the absence of any public statement from the Russian health ministry are all consistent with that pattern. No confirmation yet of what killed him. The mechanism — seal it first, explain it later — is the story the Kremlin knows how to control.

HAST Different front. The USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to San Diego today after 265 uninterrupted days at sea supporting operations in the Iran theater. That's a record deployment length for a carrier strike group. Crew conditions deteriorated during that time — sailors reported exhaustion, maintenance delays, and medical care gaps. No casualty count released, but the Navy's own logs flagged strain. One carrier, one ship's company, one mission that ran longer than the institution designed for.

KELI On health now. Shigella — a bacterium that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration — is spreading with antibiotic resistance. The New York Post reported Thursday that cases are rising and the strain is morphing into a drug-resistant variant. Public health agencies are tracking it. The mechanism is simple: tight conditions, poor sanitation, person-to-person transmission, and bacteria that survive standard treatments. No vaccine. Prevention is the only tool right now.

HAST Trump spoke at a White House Science Summit Thursday and said the United States has tamed electricity, invented the light bulb, developed the airplane, harnessed the atom, unleashed superintelligence. He said there is nobody who can compete. The backdrop: his administration has cut funding for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy. The statement and the budget move are in direct contradiction. Boasting about American scientific supremacy while defunding the institutions that produce it is a clean structural gap. The press will cover the speech. The budget cut is the fact underneath.

KELI Justice Samuel Alito responded this week to reporting by CNN's Joan Biskupic about internal Supreme Court deliberations. Biskupic has written books on the Court and has historically had access to clerks and justices willing to speak on background. Alito said she no longer has inside information and is now making up reporting based on his body language. Biskupic has not publicly responded. The Court is fractious; the leaks are real; and the characterization of her work as invented is a direct escalation. Watch whether other justices defend the reporting or stay silent.

KELI Before we close, a history note.

HAST On this day in 2001, a Cessna and a Scandinavian Airlines jetliner collided in heavy fog during takeoff from Milan — 118 people killed.

KELI That's the Independent News Drop. For Lawz bodycam explainers, check the channel. Cards, Bible shirts, and art shirts at inkwell.wiki slash cards. Full script at inkwell.wiki slash news. From Inkwell.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. The same workshop behind this drop just published the Magnificat — the song Mary sings in Luke, where the powerful are pulled down from their thrones and the hungry are filled.

HAST It reads less like a carol than a manifesto. Find it at inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
