KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Heavy one to lead. The White House announced Friday night — six forty-seven PM, posted on Truth Social — that the United States has secured majority control of more than sixty-five billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela at no cost to the American taxpayer. That's the language. Sixty-five billion barrels.

KELI From our Ground News desk. The deal moved fast and stayed opaque. The American side is a Pentagon office called the Office of Strategic Capital. The Venezuelan side signed by an interim president who has never stood for election. The partner on the ground is a Barbados-based company controlled by Alejandro Betancourt Lopez. The contract itself is not public, which means the terms are not public — the grant duration got reported as both twenty-five years and one hundred years depending on the outlet, the U.S. stake as both thirty-five percent and outright majority. Nobody made anyone reconcile that. And the claim of no cost to the taxpayer ran into a structural problem: the Pentagon is taking an equity position, and the State Department committed to buy the output. Those are costs, or at minimum commitments with cost attached.

HAST So the counter-read: newsrooms will frame this as a geopolitical win for the White House and a resource coup. That's the simple read. Structurally, what you're looking at is a deal announced on a social platform that charges one hundred thousand a month for faster visibility, with terms nobody's reconciled, signed by parties without domestic mandate or public accountability, and underwritten by federal commitments that the administration isn't itemizing. The checkable prediction: within seventy-two hours, either the Pentagon or State releases a line item on what they're actually spending and committing to, or the contract terms get published, or neither happens and this deal stays as announced — half-transparent on a Friday night, with the president correcting himself ninety-four minutes later on the scale of the resource.

KELI Staying stateside. Texas early voting is running ahead of the 2022 midterm pace just days in. The Washington Times reports Texans are stampeding to the polls, and the turnout split is likely to determine who controls the U.S. Senate. Ken Paxton and Columba Talarico are both on tour hitting campaign stops across the state as votes come in.

HAST Different terrain now. Missouri's Republican Party is running a new playbook to defend an abortion ban: they're tying it to restrictions on gender-affirming care for transgender minors. Dr. Jennifer Smith, an OB-GYN, canvassed to overturn Missouri's abortion ban in 2024. Now she's back in her white coat knocking doors on weekends to stop the state from banning abortion again. After Roe fell, she said, you could see how scared people were to consider being pregnant in Missouri. The state's trigger law went active and shut down virtually all abortion access.

KELI On the ground in the West Bank. Israeli forces demolished homes in Hebron, displacing Palestinian families. The crackdown followed the killing of two Israeli soldiers by Palestinian gunmen on Friday, and it landed just days before Israel's election. The BBC reports the demolitions as part of a broader security operation.

HAST Four Corners flooding. Intense rainfall hammered the region late this week. Rivers flooded, towns declared emergencies, and rescue operations moved through the area as storms shift southeast. NPR reports residents displaced as the water recedes.

KELI Before we close, a history note. On this day in 1980, the government of Poland legalized the Solidarity trade union — the movement that would help end communist rule across Eastern Europe.

KELI That's the Independent News Drop. For Venezuela oil contracts and Pentagon equity positions, head to inkwell.wiki slash cards. Bodycam explainers on the channel. Full scripts at inkwell.wiki slash news. From Inkwell.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a close reading of the opening of John's Gospel — in the beginning was the Word — and the single article-less phrase the Trinity debate still turns on.

HAST Grammar, not slogan. At inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
