KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST A man is dead after a stabbing Friday morning in South Amarillo. Police say one person is in custody at an apartment on Maverick Street. The investigation is ongoing, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Amarillo Police Department has not released additional details on the suspect or a motive yet.
KELI That's the street-level reality — one dead, one arrested, and the Potter County system now moving through a homicide investigation with minimal public information released so far. Simple read is "stabbing, arrest, case ongoing." Structural reality underneath is that early-custody cases often hinge on whether the person charged exercises their right to counsel or speaks to detectives, and whether evidence at the scene — weapon recovery, witness statements, any video — corroborates or contradicts the narrative police will build. Watch the next 48 hours for a formal charge and a bond hearing. That's when you'll see whether this moves fast or stalls in the system.
HAST Sticking with Potter County courts, an Amarillo man is indicted on continuous sexual abuse of a child under fourteen. Justice Alexander Veale, twenty-nine years old, was arrested in October. Randall County grand jury indicted him Wednesday. The charge is felony continuous sexual abuse, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence and is a strike against release on bond. Court records do not yet reflect bail status or next appearance.
KELI Different front now. The Potter County Sheriff's Office is searching for Christian Dominick Brewer, twenty-one, wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to three hundred dollars for information leading to arrest. You can call 806-374-4400, tip online at amapolice.org, or use the P3 Tips App.
HAST On the city calendar, Amarillo and Canyon municipal buildings will close Tuesday for Veterans Day — that includes City Hall, libraries, and both municipal courts. Solid waste pickup schedules change that week. Amarillo City Transit is running normal service and offering free rides to military veterans on Wednesday.
KELI Heavier next. Amarillo College is opening registration Monday for five short-term workforce programs — accounting, data analytics, data center operations, human resources, and project management. Classes start in January. You can register and find program details at AC's website.
HAST The Amarillo College Foundation landed a two-year, hundred-thousand-dollar grant from Bank of America as a 2026 Neighborhood Builder. The money and leadership resources go to support the college's Advocacy and Resource Center.
KELI Pantex reached the halfway point on its Analytical Gas Lab construction project, which remains on track for completion next September. The lab is part of the plant's infrastructure expansion at the site north of Amarillo.
HAST Before we close, a history note. On this day in nineteen seventy-one, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission detonated Cannikin, the largest American underground hydrogen bomb, on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians.
