KELI We start in the Middle East. Iran launched missile and drone strikes against US Gulf allies overnight. Kuwait reports a fire at a power plant following the attack. Bahrain also reports multiple rounds of strikes. Air raid sirens were heard in Jordan as well.

HAST The structural fact to hold onto here: these are strikes against US-aligned Gulf states, not US forces directly. That distinction matters for how escalation gets framed in subsequent diplomacy.

KELI Still in the region. Syria's transitional government has reshuffled its security and intelligence leadership. The government says the shake-up will strengthen security services and clear the way for reconstruction.

HAST Leadership reshuffles in transitional governments are easy to describe as modernization. The harder question coverage tends to skip is who is being removed and what factions they represented. That detail shapes whether this is consolidation or reform.

KELI Staying with questions of political identity in the region. The outlet Al Jazeera has published a conversation between Marc Lamont Hill and artist Molly Crabapple on the Jewish Labour Bund, anti-Zionism, and the current state of the Jewish left. It's framed around the question of what happened to a tradition of Jewish leftist politics that was once significant and is now largely absent from mainstream representation.

HAST The piece is explicitly ideological, and it's worth flagging that Al Jazeera has a stated editorial interest in Palestinian perspectives. KELI Connected question, different sport. Al Jazeera has also published a piece on who controls football in Palestine, examining how Palestinian football associations operate under Israeli occupation and what the sport represents to the people playing it.

HAST The piece makes the argument that football for Palestinians is inseparable from political context. That's an editorializing claim, but it's grounded in documented material: FIFA has faced ongoing pressure regarding Israeli conduct toward Palestinian football infrastructure. The structural point the piece doesn't always make explicit is that sports governance bodies have formal rules about political interference that they apply very inconsistently depending on the member state.

KELI To the United Kingdom. On Monday, Andy Burnham becomes the UK's prime minister, succeeding Keir Starmer. Burnham was previously Mayor of Greater Manchester. NPR's profile describes his politics as shaped by England's north-south class divide.

HAST Worth noting what the framing does here. The north-south class divide angle positions Burnham as a break from the metropolitan Labour establishment. Whether his policy platform actually reflects that is a separate question from the biographical narrative. The profile is largely biographical.

KELI A seismic event, literal this time. A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Peru. Footage shows firefighters searching rubble in Pumpunya after a building collapsed. At least one person is reported missing.

KELI In the United States, federal health officials have identified the source of a cyclosporiasis outbreak. The FDA says iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sold at Taco Bell and Walmart locations was responsible for the infections. The illness causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

HAST Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection, not bacterial. That distinction matters for how supply chain contamination is traced and how quickly it can be identified. The coverage of food safety outbreaks tends to lead with the restaurant or retailer brand, which is the distribution point, rather than the grower, which is the source. Here the source is identified.

KELI In Miami, Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate were arrested. Video of the arrest was posted publicly. No formal charges have been detailed in the reports available at the time of this recording.

HAST The Tates have active legal proceedings in Romania. Whether US charges are related or separate is not yet clear from what's been published. We'll note it and move on.

KELI In sport. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Belgian Grand Prix, his sixth win of the 2026 Formula One season. Teammate and championship rival George Russell crashed out on the opening lap. Antonelli extends his lead in the standings.

HAST Two teammates running first and second in a championship is an uncomfortable situation for any constructor. Russell crashing on lap one while Antonelli wins is the kind of result that will generate paddock questions Mercedes will want to get ahead of quickly.

KELI Turning to urban design. Climate advocate Mina Hasman has put forward a framework for designing cities around the behavior of forests, with buildings functioning as individual trees within a larger ecosystem for managing heat.

HAST This is the kind of piece where the vision is interesting and the gap between vision and implementation is large. The structural question that tends to get soft-pedaled in this genre of coverage is cost and retrofit feasibility in existing dense cities, as opposed to new developments where the design can be built in from the start.

KELI Actor Terence Donovan has died at the age of 90 in Melbourne, Australia. He was known for his role in the long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours. His son, actor Jason Donovan, announced the death on social media, saying his father died peacefully on Saturday night.

KELI Finally, Matty Healy, frontman of the band The 1975, has married model Gabbriette Bechtel in Los Angeles. The couple were first publicly linked in 2023.
