KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Morning. Canyon Fire Department retired its primary engine this week in a push-in ceremony — the old tradition where firefighters wash, dry, and manually roll a new rig into the bay. The department marked the transition from an older unit to a newer primary fire engine. It's a ceremonial handoff, but it marks real operational change for the Canyon crews. New equipment, new capacity on response runs.
KELI Staying with operational shifts — bigger scale now. Texas voters rejected billions in new taxes and bond debt on Tuesday. That's a hard brake on state spending authority. The measure would have funded infrastructure and education expansions across the state. High Plains school districts and county governments had watched those dollars. Now they're weighing what gets cut or delayed.
HAST This is the structural read underneath that one: the state legislature and the governor ran bond and tax measures to voters after years of resisting them. They framed it as essential. Voters said no. That tells you something about the gap between what Austin thinks is critical and what the electorate will fund. Watch the next legislative session closely — expect either a smaller, regional ask, or deferrals pushed to school boards and commissioners to cover locally. It won't vanish.
KELI On a different front — James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday. Talarico is the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate race since 1988. It's a continuation of a shift in High Plains voter patterns we've tracked. Talarico will move to Washington in January.
HAST State-level, Texas election officials have acknowledged problems with TEAM, the voter registration and management system. They've been working on fixes for more than a year. The state and local election offices are now coordinating on patches. Amarillo and Potter County election administration will be part of those conversations moving forward.
KELI Before we close, a history note.
HAST In 1994, the Republican midterm wave secured majorities in both houses of Congress — fifty-four House seats and eight Senate seats flipped — bringing four decades of Democratic control of the House to an end.
