KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Heavy hour on the Middle East and U.S. power moves. Let's go.
KELI From our Ground News desk: Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir laid out a formal expulsion plan for Gaza on September third. He called it Disengagement 710. The numbers are stark — he's targeting 250,000 Palestinians leaving in year one, 1.11 million within three years, 1.86 million in seven years. A dedicated emigration ministry, NIS 10 billion to start, packages covering travel, housing, vocational training, 24 months of support, monthly publication of departure statistics. Ben-Gvir said instead of digging tunnels, it is time to pack suitcases and find work abroad. Seven days later, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar was in Ljubljana and told the press we are not planning to expel or deport anyone from the Gaza Strip. Those were his exact words.
HAST So the counter-read: Cable news will report this as internal Israeli coalition chaos — one minister goes aggressive, another walks it back, sound and fury. That's surface noise. What's underneath is a policy document with 20 pages, a budget framework scaling to NIS 50 billion, and a minister whose party made this a coalition condition. Sa'ar's denial doesn't erase the plan; it signals which way the wind is blowing in the room when foreigners are listening. The prediction: watch whether Ben-Gvir repeats the plan publicly after the Schumer-led Democratic shift in the U.S. Congress. If he quiets down, the expulsion pressure is conditional on American cover. If he repeats it louder, it means the political cost inside Israel to his coalition partners has risen above the cost of international friction.
KELI Staying overseas, but different theater. In Yemen, at least 30 people were killed in a strike on al-Hadara market in Taiz. The Houthis blame government forces. The government blames the Houthis. The strike happened, the bodies are documented, and neither side has offered independent verification of the weapon or the targeting. That gap — no accountability mechanism, no neutral observer — is the structural fact that doesn't change no matter which side fired.
HAST On a different front: Tesla is closing out Cybertruck production in 2027. Elon Musk posted Friday that the company will wind down production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab output. After years of lagging sales and multiple recalls, the Cybertruck — a vehicle that became synonymous with MAGA aesthetics — is being shelved. That's a hard market signal. The truck didn't move units at the price point or in the volume Tesla projected.
KELI The House and Senate swapped hands this week. Democrats took both chambers. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is now plotting the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact — a mechanism to effectively abolish the Electoral College without a constitutional amendment. States that join pledge their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. If enough states sign on, the Electoral College becomes ceremonial. The Compact is legal under existing law, and Democrats now have the Senate votes to push it. Republicans will call it a power grab. Structurally, it's a rules change that flips leverage from rural and swing-state coalitions to nationwide popular margins. That shift is real, and it's now in motion.
HAST Inside the White House: Stephen Miller, currently Deputy Chief of Staff, is moving into the Chief of Staff role starting Monday, November ninth. Susie Wiles is moving to the Trump Political Action Committee. Trump posted the announcement on Truth Social, calling Miller one of his most trusted advisors. Wiles has been in the inner circle since 2016. This is a continuation move — Miller's immigration and deportation policy architecture has been central to the administration's first term, and now he's taking the operational chair that coordinates the entire West Wing.
KELI Before we close, a history note. On this day in 1936, the Spanish Republican government fled Madrid for Valencia as fascist forces advanced, and the Madrid Defense Council formed to hold the capital.
