Candidate Chad Huffines is running hard on expanding that number. The simple read is that more choice means better outcomes. The structural reality underneath: every dollar that follows a student out of a public school district shrinks the per-pupil budget for the kids who stay. Amarillo ISD hasn't seen a mass exodus yet, but the Comptroller's office sets the revenue rules. Watch the next Comptroller's race messaging — if Hegar or Huffines starts citing district-by-district flight numbers, that's when the Panhandle gets named directly.

HAST On the state level, a federal court has struck down the ban on interstate handgun sales. The decision came down from the Fifth Circuit last week, ruling that the existing law violated Second Amendment protections. Texas has some of the loosest firearms transfer rules in the country already, so the practical impact here is modest for the state itself — but it does set a precedent that other circuits will be watching.

KELI Staying with state politics, the Railroad Commission race is heating up over conduct. Bo French, a Republican candidate, is facing pressure from fellow GOP figures after a social media post surfaced in which he commented on a photo of college football fans, saying it showed "how many Americans have been displaced by foreigners." Other top-tier Republicans knew about French's history with similar comments before they backed him. No retraction or apology from French yet.
