KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST The city rezoned land near Eastridge Elementary for industrial use, and now there's talk Amazon could build a data center there. Deputy City Manager Andrew Freeman told the council Tuesday the property is on the market. Councilmember Tim Reid asked the question directly — whether a data center was coming — and Freeman didn't close the door. The land was agricultural until recently. It's not a done deal, but the mechanism is in place.
KELI Here's what matters underneath that story: rezoning changes the calculus for a property owner and a developer like Amazon. Once you move from ag to light industrial, the tax structure changes, the permitted uses open up, and the land value moves with it. When Freeman says the land is for sale, he's signaling Amarillo's zoning board isn't blocking the play. Watch for a formal development application in the next 30 to 45 days — that's your sign whether this stays a conversation or becomes a shovel-ready project. The council vote was clean, and Eastridge families should expect city staff to field questions about traffic and utilities by mid-November.
HAST On a different front, the Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial gets its official dedication today at four p.m. at 1018 South Polk. The memorial honors 110 fallen first responders across 50 agencies in the top 26 Panhandle counties. Law enforcement and fire leaders from the region will be there, along with families of the fallen.
KELI Sticking with the courts and Capitol, Trump's redistricting bet in Texas isn't panning out the way he promised. He said Texas Republicans could pick up five U.S. House seats through the redraw. Analysts now say the likely gain is one or two — closer to zero than five. The maps are set. We'll see how the districts perform in next week's midterms.
HAST The Texas Tribune ran a solid piece on election certification — the process that's been under the microscope since January 6th. It's typically quiet work, but the stakes got a lot sharper. Certification is how Texas makes an election official.
KELI One date marker. On this day in 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar unified to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
