KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Election day in Texas. Potter and Randall counties have already moved past the early vote numbers from four years ago — 18,241 in Potter, 39,779 in Randall. That's over 15,000 more ballots cast early across both counties than the entire 2022 midterm saw. Polls close at 7 p.m. central. Results should begin trickling in after that, though the Texas Tribune is flagging that it'll be hours before most races are called statewide.
KELI The simple read on early voting is turnout — and it's up. The structural piece underneath: higher early vote does not predict winner or margin the way newsrooms sometimes frame it. It tells you participation is elevated. We'll see if that holds when Election Day voting closes at 7 and the county clerks start the count. Check back after 8 p.m. for any clear patterns in how the votes are breaking by precinct and county.
HAST Amarillo police charged two additional suspects in a murder case out of October. The department hasn't released the names or details yet, but this is the second round of charges tied to the same incident. Expect a fuller statement from APD later today.
KELI On the state side, Texas leads the nation in 287(g) immigration enforcement agreements with ICE — 527 as of mid-September. That's roughly one-fifth of every such agreement in the country. Under the Task Force Model, which the Trump administration revived in 2025, local officers can make immigration arrests during routine police stops. The Panhandle hasn't been named in reporting on those agreements yet, but this is the legal and operational architecture that's expanding across Texas departments right now.
HAST One history note before we close. In 1973, NASA launched Mariner 10 toward Mercury — the first probe to reach the planet when it arrived on March 29, 1974.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a close reading of the opening of John's Gospel — in the beginning was the Word — and the single article-less phrase the Trinity debate still turns on.
