That's the sitting president saying the man running intelligence hadn't told him what was happening. The phrase live exercise came from the ex-director of the CIA. Not a slip. Not metaphor. That exact language. And it moved nowhere in the news cycle because the frame was already locked on China pressure.

HAST The structure underneath: when a presser moment doesn't fit the established narrative, it doesn't get covered as news. It gets filed as a verbal tic.
