KELI We start with Iran. New documentary footage shows Senator Lindsey Graham saying he almost cried tears of joy after persuading Donald Trump to strike Iran. Graham claims personal credit for that decision in excerpts from a film not yet publicly released.

HAST The structural fact the coverage buries: a sitting U.S. senator is on camera describing his emotional investment in a military strike on a sovereign country as a personal achievement. That is a different kind of story than hawk-supports-war. It is a senator describing his influence over a presidential war decision as a source of private joy.

KELI On the military picture on the ground: reporting from The Intercept, drawing on weapons analysts and U.S. defense officials, describes Iran combining attack drones with advanced ballistic missiles in a pattern designed to exhaust American interceptor stockpiles. The U.S. is running short of interceptors.

HAST The combination matters. Drones are cheap and slow. Ballistic missiles are fast and expensive to stop. You run them together and you drain the defense faster than it can be resupplied. That is not speculation, it is basic saturation logic. The coverage tends to frame it as Iran being clever. The structural fact is that U.S. interceptor production was never scaled for a sustained exchange.

KELI Staying with the politics of the conflict: in the United Kingdom, Reform U.K. leader Nigel Farage filed a police report against Green Party leader Zack Polanski over an Instagram post. The post showed a man in a guillotine T-shirt with text reading "We're only making plans for Nigel." Polanski did not create the post. He accepted a collaboration tag from another account, meaning it published to his 713,000 followers. Farage, who reposted the screenshot publicly on X, has been a vocal critic of Britain's record of arresting people for online speech.

HAST Britain logged more than 12,000 arrests for online speech crimes in 2023. Farage has criticized that record. He then reported a political opponent to police for a post Polanski did not write. The story is not that Farage is a hypocrite, though the facts support that reading. The story is that Britain's speech-policing infrastructure is so normalized that even its critics reach for it as a tactical tool.

KELI In New York, Fox News ran a segment highlighting that several celebrities who publicly supported mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani now appear in a searchable public database his office published listing pied-à-terre property owners in the city. Names, addresses, and property values are included. The tax targets unoccupied second homes valued at one million dollars or more.

HAST The Fox News frame is that Mamdani's supporters are now on his own list. The structural fact the segment does not address: the database is built from public property records. What is new is that Mamdani's office compiled and published them in searchable form. Whether that constitutes a privacy violation under New York law is a live legal question. The irony angle is the story that ran. The legal and policy question is the story that did not.

KELI A federal lawsuit alleging social media defamation and racial discrimination in the hair accessories industry has been allowed to proceed. The case involves a Black creator who claims a design was stolen and that others publicly accused the company involved. The core allegation in the suit is that social media posts falsely characterized the situation and caused commercial harm.

HAST The reason this cleared a motion to dismiss is that the statements quoted are specific factual claims, not just opinions. "You know that it was stolen" is an assertion of knowledge, not a feeling. Courts treat those differently. The race dimension is real and the coverage notes it, but the legal question that determines whether the suit survives is narrower: were the statements false statements of fact made to a large audience. A judge said there is enough there to find out.

KELI President Trump said Tuesday he will award a high civilian honor to a sixteen-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, who was filmed pulling a young child from the surf during a rip current. The video spread widely over the weekend. Eric Trump shared it on Monday and posted on X asking his father to give the lifeguard the highest civilian honor. Trump announced the award the following day.

HAST The on-the-record sequence: Eric Trump asked publicly, and the president responded publicly the next day. The structural fact is not about the lifeguard, whose actions were genuinely remarkable. It is about the decision pathway. A formal civilian honor, typically processed through established channels, was committed to via a social media exchange between a president and his son.

KELI In France, a wildfire has burned through the commercial district of Biscarrosse in the Landes department of southwestern France. Businesses and structures are described as destroyed. The area is a popular coastal resort town, and the fire moved quickly through dry summer conditions.

KELI Uganda's health ministry has declared the end of an Ebola outbreak. Officials are urging the public to remain alert and to continue observing public health precautions. No further case counts were specified in the announcement.

KELI Ghana is mourning Sulemana Abdul Samed, who died at thirty-three. He was the country's tallest man, diagnosed with gigantism, and described by those who knew him as generous and well-loved.

KELI And finally, in Turkey, former CHP chairman Ozgur Ozel and a group of parliamentarians have broken from the main opposition party to form a new political organization called New Party. The split creates a more fragmented opposition landscape facing President Erdogan's AK Party ahead of future elections.

HAST Opposition unity has been the only structural argument for a competitive alternative to Erdogan. A formal split does not make that impossible, but it makes the arithmetic harder, and that is what the formation of New Party actually changes.
