KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Potter County's jail is running hot. The Sheriff's Office is holding 608 inmates right now — 533 in the local detention center, 75 shipped to other facilities. That's 89 percent capacity. The trend line is up, and resources are stretched. We'll watch how the county responds.

KELI The simple read is overcrowding. The structural fact underneath: Potter County has been cycling more people through the system for years without expanding bed space or diversion programs, so you hit a ceiling and then you export the problem to other counties' jails. That costs money. If the county doesn't vote to expand or fund pretrial release or drug courts, you'll see this number stay high or climb higher through the end of the year.

HAST On a different front, the Amarillo Civic Center has a new general manager. Christopher Post takes over for the retired Bo Fowlkes. Post is a 19-year city employee and an Amarillo native. He said he plans to improve guest experience and expand the facility's capacity to serve the community.

KELI Staying with state business — the U.S. Senate race. Ken Paxton, James Talarico, and Ted Brown are on the ballot, and it's close. The Texas Tribune asked all three about data centers, Flock cameras, and THC policy. Talarico and Brown answered. Paxton did not respond, so the Tribune used his past public statements to lay out where he stands. That race stays fluid into Election Day.

HAST Before we close, a history note.

KELI Forty-one years ago today, Ameritech Mobile Communications launched the first U.S. cellular network in Chicago — the moment that killed the landline era.

KELI That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, something lighter from Inkwell. There's a piece asking what the Beatles songbook keeps reaching for — a world set right, meaning that holds — without pretending the band were secret prophets.

HAST An honest look, and an open door. At inkwell dot wiki, slash beatles.
