KELI We'll start in the occupied West Bank. Israeli troops have raided the village of Qusra, south of Nablus. Separately, residents of Qusra say Israeli settlers and soldiers have besieged families in the area for eight days, blocking water and outside aid. The army operation and the settler siege are being reported as distinct events, though they are happening in the same village at the same time.

HAST The structural thing to note is that the military raid and the settler blockade are treated in coverage as separate stories. They are not. One involves uniformed soldiers. One involves civilians. Both are preventing the same Palestinian families from accessing basic necessities. Covering them separately obscures whether command and coordination exist between the two.

KELI Also out of Israel: former captive Rom Braslavski has publicly asked National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to grant him permission to execute Palestinian prisoners by hanging. That request was made openly.

HAST What the coverage does not spell out is the procedural weight of that ask. Braslavski is not making an abstract statement. He is petitioning a sitting cabinet minister, by name, for authority to carry out an execution. The minister's response, or absence of one, is the news. We don't have that on the record yet.

KELI In the United States, a domestic accountability story. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said Sunday on CBS's Face the Nation that Senator Mitch McConnell has absolutely refused to produce a brief proof-of-life video for constituents. Beshear said he has received no response from McConnell, that he wishes him good health, but that McConnell's employers are the people of Kentucky and they deserve basic confirmation that he is able to serve.

HAST The Senate does not have a formal mechanism requiring members to demonstrate fitness for duty. Beshear is not invoking one because none exists. What he is doing is applying public pressure through the press, which is the only tool a governor has over a sitting senator from his own state. The structural gap here is the gap in the rules, not the gap between the two men.

KELI Also in Washington, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana was questioned Sunday on ABC's This Week about his vote to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Correspondent Martha Raddatz asked Cassidy directly whether Kennedy had lied to him, given that Kennedy had provided guarantees about the vaccine advisory schedule that were not honored. Cassidy said the American people have been poorly served, and cited White House guarantees he said were not enforced. He did not answer the lying question directly.

HAST Worth separating: Cassidy is on record saying the guarantees existed. He is on record saying they were broken. He is not on record saying who broke them or whether he considers the confirmation vote a mistake. Those are three different claims and only two of them have been made.

KELI In Michigan, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing questions about his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a professor at the University of Chicago. Fox News Digital reported Friday that Abdelhadi was arrested in October at a rally outside an ICE facility in Illinois, charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a government employee and two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer. The charges stem from an allegation that she spit on an Illinois state trooper.

HAST The structural point is simple: these are charges, not convictions. The outlet that broke the story described Abdelhadi as a far-left professor, which is an editorial label, not a legal or factual descriptor. The charges are real. The framing around them is doing extra work.

KELI On AI regulation, futurist Max Tegmark has noted publicly that sandwiches in the United States are subject to more regulatory oversight than artificial intelligence systems. He is using the comparison to argue the regulatory gap is a policy choice, not an oversight.

HAST It's a useful provocation. The sandwich comparison works because food safety regulation is explicit, mandatory, and enforced with inspection and penalty. AI has none of that at the federal level in the United States right now. Tegmark's point is that the absence of a framework is itself a framework. Someone decided not to act.

KELI Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo, speaking publicly, has given what observers are calling his clearest indication yet that he may retire at the end of the current football season. He has not confirmed it.
