The checkable part is this — watch whether State Department statements in the coming days distance themselves from Blanche's language or reinforce it. Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President, proposed last week a constitutional amendment that would bar dual nationals from running for president or any governor's seat in any Mexican state. KELI Staying with disaster recovery, but the lens is different. ProPublica has been reporting on Hurricane Helene — the deaths, the displacement. This week they covered a man in western North Carolina whose wife was killed in the flooding and his mobile home was destroyed. The land his home sat on is now being rented again. New tenants are moving onto the same flood-prone parcels. FEMA recovery funds went to rebuilding. The mechanism that created the risk in the first place — cheap mobile housing on land with known flood history — is still intact. The same families will be at the same risk next season.

HAST That's a structure problem, not a weather problem. FEMA money goes to repair. It doesn't address zoning, doesn't mandate relocation, doesn't change the economics that push low-income residents into flood zones in the first place.
