Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Heavy hour. The DOJ charged twenty-eight green card holders in California with voter fraud Monday — illegal voter registration, illegal ballots cast. Eleven arrested so far, more warrants outstanding. Trump appointees also directed a federal cybersecurity agency to secretly acquire a voting machine and attempt to hack it. That's DHS political staff asking CISA to do the work. And from our Ground News desk: back in September, Trump said the Iran war would end immediately after the election because Iran couldn't hold out any longer. He said oil prices would tumble after that. The war did end. Prices stayed high until the vote. Now we're looking at the mechanism he described — not diplomacy, which he ruled out in the same breath, but a foreign conflict timed to a U.S. election cycle.

KELI The counter-read here is straightforward. Most newsrooms will frame this as Trump predicting geopolitical shifts based on economic pressure. The structural reality underneath is different. He positioned the war's end not as a result of negotiation or U.S. policy leverage, but as a function of U.S. domestic electoral timing. He said they can't hold out, so they won't try to affect the election by continuing the conflict. That makes the timing of a foreign military surrender dependent on American voters, not on military or diplomatic outcomes. The prediction we can check: if the mechanism is electoral pressure on Iran, then the ceasefire holds only as long as the electoral incentive holds. Watch whether Iranian officials or proxies make moves in November and December that suggest they're reassessing whether the deal — or the pause — survives past inauguration.

HAST Staying with election interference: ProPublica reports that Trump appointees at DHS asked the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to secretly acquire and test a voting machine. The request came months into the second term. CISA is the federal agency responsible for election security. The appointees wanted a covert operation — not a transparency audit, not a public security review. That's a test run on actual equipment pulled from the supply chain, which means handling classified voting system designs and potentially copying proprietary code.

KELI Texas election officials discovered thousands of backlogged voter registration records days before early voting started. Address updates, new registrations — local officials have to process them before polls open Monday. The state didn't flag the backlog earlier. No word yet on how many registrations won't clear in time.

HAST Ukraine update: Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Zelensky, told the BBC that U.S. intelligence restrictions are costing lives. Ukrainian civilians aren't getting advance warning of missile strikes because the U.S. is withholding real-time intelligence sharing. Beskrestnov said there hasn't been enough time to warn people to take shelter. This is a continuing story — we've reported on the intelligence restrictions before — but the human toll is now on the record from Kyiv.

KELI A months-old anti-robotaxi group is steering transportation policy from Albany to D.C., according to Reason. The group's safety and job-loss claims don't hold up under scrutiny, but the incoming D.C. mayor has already agreed to slow Waymo's expansion in the city based on the pressure. That's a small group with no elected authority shaping municipal policy through a few decision-makers.

KELI Before we close, a history note.
