Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Good morning. Early voting numbers are in across Texas, and the High Plains is part of a record. More than 7.7 million Texans cast ballots before Election Day, surpassing the 2018 total. That's over 40 percent of the state's electorate. Amarillo and the Panhandle tracked with statewide turnout — a sign that whoever wins tomorrow, the margin will matter more than the surprise.

KELI The simple read is "record turnout means engagement." The structural reality underneath is different. Higher early voting doesn't predict winner or margin — it just spreads the vote across two weeks instead of one day, which flattens the reporting signal. What you want to watch is the party breakdown within those 7.7 million. If one campaign moved more of its likely voters to early ballots, the other side still has Election Day leverage. Tuesday will tell you whether that bet worked.

HAST On the state level, an appeals court ruled in favor of Governor Abbott this week in a records dispute. The decision blocks a Democratic group from accessing certain materials related to election administration. Abbott's office says the ruling protects executive confidentiality. Democrats say it shields documents the public has a right to see. The court's reasoning turns on whether the records fall under a state exemption for internal deliberations. That exemption is narrow in theory, wide in practice — and it just got wider.

KELI Different front entirely. A Texas high school principal was arrested for failing to report misconduct. The charge is a Class B misdemeanor under state law. Schools are mandated reporters — any adult who suspects abuse must file within 48 hours. When a principal doesn't, the liability shifts to the district and the individual. We don't have the district name or the specifics of what wasn't reported yet, but this is the kind of case that moves through court slowly and through school board politics faster.

HAST Lighter footing next. Several Amarillo-area marching bands advanced to the UIL State Marching Band Contest after competing in the Area Round. We'll have details on which schools made the cut at our full briefing online.

KELI Before we close, a history note. On this day in 2016, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, ending a 108-year championship drought — the longest in baseball.

HAST That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, something lighter from Inkwell. There's a piece asking what the Beatles songbook keeps reaching for — a world set right, meaning that holds — without pretending the band were secret prophets.

HAST An honest look, and an open door. At inkwell dot wiki, slash beatles.
