HAST Good morning. We're leading with a presser that wasn't one — and what it tells you about how two governments handle footage of detained people.

KELI From our Ground News desk: back in May, video emerged from Israeli detention facilities showing abuse of prisoners. Four days later, President Herzog said publicly it is forbidden to abuse prisoners. Minister Ben-Gvir fired back on X — said a president who calls hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens brutes is not fit to be president. Both statements on the record. Both men still in office.

HAST Here's what the coverage missed. Most newsrooms framed this as a feud — two officials in conflict, pick your side. What never got reported: did detention policy actually change after Herzog condemned what the video showed? The answer, based on available public statements, is no.

KELI So the counter-read: simple framing says this is political theater between a president and a minister — two personalities clashing over words. Structural reality is that Herzog condemned an abuse the video documented, Ben-Gvir rejected the condemnation as an insult to Israeli citizens, and neither man's statement led to any announced shift in how detainees are held or monitored. Which means the presser-that-wasn't-a-presser was exactly that — a statement and a retort, with no mechanism attached. Watch whether independent monitors or the Knesset push for actual policy change in the next ten days. If silence holds, you'll know the statements were pure positioning.

HAST Staying with presser moments, but a different register. Charlie Kirk was killed a year ago — shot at an event at Utah Valley University in September 2025. The Intercept has been tracking how he's become a recurring online meme since his death, complete with an AI-generated song that hit number one on Spotify's Viral chart. Speech-crackdown efforts around his activism, his organization Turning Point USA, have essentially turned him into a cultural artifact instead of a resolved case.

KELI Different front entirely. Measles is rising in the United States, and the federal health secretary and the CDC have picked a public fight with Pennsylvania over what counts as a measles death. STAT News reports that states use a standard process for notifying the CDC about notifiable diseases, established case definitions that usually come from long, deliberative epidemiology work. Right now, mid-outbreak, that bureaucratic process is being litigated in public. Health experts say the last thing an outbreak response needs is drama over definitions when the focus should be on the response itself.

HAST Lighter footing for this one. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana complimented the Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker on air Sunday, told her he likes her better than her predecessor Chuck Todd. Todd left the show in 2023 after nine years, left NBC altogether in 2025, and now hosts his own programs. Kennedy's comment was meant as praise. It landed as an awkward moment in real time.

KELI Internationally, Germany's far-right AfD fell three seats short of a majority in a state election, and is now saying democracy demands that other parties work with them to form a government. The BBC reports the party is pushing that framing after the vote. No other party has committed to coalition talks.
