KELI We start with a personnel story out of the intelligence community. Julia Curlee, a former CIA officer with twenty years of service, spoke on CNN Tuesday about her firing under the Trump administration. Curlee, who served as Mike Pence's daily intelligence briefer and as the National Security Council's director for intelligence programs, says her termination followed MAGA influencer Laura Loomer publicly threatening to expose her identity as a transgender woman. Curlee told CNN's Dana Bash that during Trump's second term she was barred from using the women's restroom in her building and had to leave CIA campus entirely to use a facility. She also published an essay in The Atlantic titled "The Wrong Kind of American."

HAST The structural fact the coverage tends to underplay: Curlee is not a fringe figure. She briefed Trump personally aboard Air Force One during the first term. The question her case raises is less about ideology and more about what security clearance decisions look like when a political influencer with no formal role is documented as the proximate trigger for an action against a senior intelligence officer.

KELI Also on the primary beat, in South Carolina. Senator Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, is in a Republican runoff against Representative Ralph Norman for the GOP Senate nomination. At a debate Tuesday night in Newberry, moderator Greta Van Susteren asked Graham about Taiwan. Graham responded on air that she is, quote, not that informed on national security issues. Graham was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster at Trump's urging and is now running to keep the seat for a full term.

HAST The context that matters: Graham sits on a Senate seat, not a House backbench. The admission came in response to a direct question about one of the most active flashpoints in US-China relations. That is not a gaffe about process or procedure. That is a substantive answer on the record about the scope of her preparation for the role she is seeking.

KELI There is a related vacancy on the Senate side in Texas. A special election has been set to fill the seat of State Senator Brian Birdwell, who resigned after being appointed US assistant secretary of defense at the Pentagon. Birdwell had already announced he was not seeking reelection to the state seat. The special election will now determine his replacement.

HAST The through line across these three political stories is appointment and succession mechanics. Curlee's story involves who has informal power to trigger formal personnel actions. Graham's story involves gubernatorial appointment as a path to elected incumbency. Birdwell's involves a Pentagon appointment creating a downstream vacancy. KELI To trade now. The US and Canada have reached a deal to avert steep tariffs, according to statements from President Trump. Earlier Tuesday, Trump had announced a three-day pause on new tariffs covering a wide range of Canadian goods. Shortly before a midnight deadline, Trump announced the pause was because the two countries were close to finalizing terms. Al Jazeera and the BBC both report the agreement was announced by Trump himself.

HAST The on-the-record situation: a deal has been announced. The terms have not been published. The announcement came from the US executive branch, not from a joint statement or a Canadian government press conference. Those are different things. We will cover what the document says when it is released.

KELI Still on trade and energy flows. A US official has confirmed that American Gulf Coast refineries are currently processing roughly five hundred thousand barrels per day of Venezuelan crude. That represents approximately half of Venezuela's total output of one point two five million barrels per day. The official's statement was reported by Al Jazeera.

HAST The structural note: this is a US official confirming a supply relationship with Venezuela at scale, during a period when the administration has maintained sanctions pressure on Caracas in other domains. Energy supply chains and sanctions policy are running in parallel here, and the official statement does not resolve the tension between them. It just confirms the volume.

KELI To a story with different geography and a different kind of institutional fracture. Ukraine's recently dismissed defense minister has publicly called for a presidential election. Martial law has been in place in Ukraine since February 2022, under which elections are formally suspended. The sacked minister's call puts him in direct public conflict with the legal framework that the Zelensky government is operating under.

HAST The fact the coverage sometimes skips: a former defense minister is not a private citizen making a political argument. He held one of the three or four most sensitive posts in a country at active war. His call for elections is legally constrained by a framework his own government implemented and that he served under. That does not make the argument wrong, but it does make the speaker's position complicated in ways a straightforward news summary can miss.

KELI The Democratic Republic of Congo is now recording what officials are describing as the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country's history. Al Jazeera reports that three compounding factors are driving the severity: active armed conflict in eastern Congo limiting responder access, a significant delay between outbreak onset and formal detection, and community mistrust of health authorities that is hampering containment. Eastern Congo has seen multiple prior Ebola responses, which makes the mistrust factor historically layered.

HAST The structural point: delayed detection in a conflict zone is not a surprise variable. It is the predictable result of having no stable health infrastructure in an active war area. The outbreak is being reported as a crisis. The conditions that made early detection impossible were present and documented before this outbreak began.

KELI On the regulatory front, Stat News reports that Trump is expected to nominate Heidi Overton, currently a White House adviser and physician, to lead the Food and Drug Administration. No formal announcement has been made. Overton would require Senate confirmation.

HAST The FDA commissioner seat has been vacant or in acting status for a significant stretch of this administration. Overton's background is as a White House insider rather than as a career regulatory official or prominent academic researcher. That is the relevant frame for watching how her confirmation process develops.

KELI And finally, in Las Vegas, a witness in the murder trial of Duane Davis, known as Keffe D, became combative on the stand. Davis is charged in connection with the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. The witness told the court he has no affection for the defendant, but refused to answer questions he believed would contribute to sending Davis to prison. The case is nearly three decades old.

HAST The evidentiary challenge in a case this old is well illustrated by that testimony. A witness can be hostile to a defendant and still decline to cooperate with the prosecution. Those two things are not in contradiction. It is a clean picture of how cold-case prosecutions can stall even when a suspect has been charged.
