KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Amarillo High School went into lockdown this afternoon before dismissal. The school issued a ParentSquare alert to families but hasn't released details on what triggered it or how long it lasted. We're working to get specifics from the district on whether there was a threat, a security concern, or another reason for the action.

KELI School lockdowns get attention fast, and parents deserve to know what happened and why. The pattern we're seeing across the country is that districts sometimes take time releasing those details, which leaves families guessing. What we know right now is the lockdown was brief and happened before students left campus. We'll have more as the district responds.

HAST Switching to the state level — West Texas A&M University is among at least five Texas colleges now cleared to use federal Workforce Pell funding to pay for job training programs, not just four-year degrees. This is new money flowing into the system specifically designed to get people trained and working faster.

KELI The Workforce Pell pilot is a shift in federal aid. Normally Pell grants go to traditional college programs. Now schools can use them for shorter certificates and training in fields like healthcare, trades, and tech. WT being in this first group means Panhandle students get access to that money sooner. The detail that matters is the federal government is essentially betting that job training beats debt for a lot of people who need to work.

HAST On campus here, West Texas A&M is also hosting its McNair Scholars research showcase today. These are graduate students presenting original work on black widow spiders, fruit flies, bilingual education, and artificial intelligence. It's the kind of pipeline work that doesn't make headlines but feeds workforce and research down the road.

KELI And the WT Great Books series continues tonight at seven at Burrowing Owl Books — a discussion of Tony Tulathimutte's short story "The Feminist," led by Dr. Brendan Stephens. That one opens at seven.

HAST Before we close, a history note. On this day in 1921, Soviet republics signed the Treaty of Kars to formalize borders between Turkey and the South Caucasus states.

KELI That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, something lighter from Inkwell. There's a piece asking what the Beatles songbook keeps reaching for — a world set right, meaning that holds — without pretending the band were secret prophets.

HAST An honest look, and an open door. At inkwell dot wiki, slash beatles.
