KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. It's Friday, May eighth. The time is seven a.m. Central. I'm Keli, joined by Hast.

HAST Good morning. We're tracking developments on jet fuel supplies in Europe, a runoff race taking shape in Texas, and new assessments of the war in Ukraine. Let's get into it.

KELI We start with energy. European airlines are watching jet fuel prices that have climbed fifty percent since the Russia-Ukraine war began. Now there's a possibility the U-S could help ease those shortages by shipping its own jet fuel across the Atlantic. The BBC reports discussions are underway about using American supplies to stabilize European markets. That's an update on the broader energy crunch tied to the conflict.

HAST Moving to Texas politics. The state's thirty-fifth congressional district primary runoffs are set for May, and we've got a full field. Two Democrats and two Republicans advanced to those runoffs for an open San Antonio-area seat. What makes this interesting: the district was drawn to favor Republicans, but Democrats say it's winnable if there's a strong year for them. The Texas Tribune has the details on who's running and what voters should know going in.

KELI One more on this. Hast, the temptation here is to read this story a certain way. What should listeners watch for?

HAST Right. The simple read is going to be that a Republican-drawn district is suddenly competitive, which means Democrats are surging. The structural reality is that a district can be drawn one way but still swing based on turnout, candidate quality, and national mood—and we saw that pattern in 2022 with some GOP seats that flipped despite favorable maps. Watch for whether the Republican who wins the runoff performs in line with the district's lean in a special election, or whether they underperform it. If the winner keeps the seat solidly red, the structural factors matter more than the map. If the Democrat wins or comes very close, then you're seeing an actual shift in the electorate.

KELI So the real test comes in the general.

HAST Exactly. The runoff itself tells you who the nominees are. The general tells you what the district is actually voting for.

KELI Science now. The journal world is dealing with a problem: fabricated citations are climbing in medical research even as the scientific workforce ages. STAT News reports on why this matters for the credibility of published findings. There's also an update on a hantavirus case that emerged on a cruise ship, and more on personnel changes at the FDA.

HAST Ukraine is also in the headlines. The Institute for the Study of War says Russian territorial advances are slowing, citing new analysis of Moscow's rate of gain. Ukraine claims Russian forces suffered more than thirty-five thousand casualties in April. Al Jazeera reports on the assessment and what it could mean for momentum in the conflict.

KELI And finally, military readiness in the Pacific. The U-S and allied forces held drills in the Philippines this week involving drone boats and long-range missiles. NPR reports the exercises are designed to test new tactics and sharpen deterrence as tensions with China remain high.

HAST Those are the stories. Let's look back. Eighty-three years ago today, Keli.

KELI In nineteen forty-one, the German Luftwaffe launched a bombing raid on Nottingham and Derby as part of its air campaign over Britain.

HAST History moving forward.

KELI That's the Independent News Drop. We'll be back next hour. From Inkwell.
