Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, then in his role directing pandemic response coordination, stood at a White House briefing and called COVID a "live exercise." He said, "We're in a live exercise here. To get this right." The president, standing next to him, interrupted: "You should have let us know." That exchange — the CIA director calling a pandemic a drill, the sitting president saying he hadn't been told — ran in every major outlet as a China story. Zero front pages covered what Pompeo actually said or what Trump's response revealed about the state of internal communication at the highest level of government during the opening weeks of a global emergency.

HAST The counter here is what it always is in moments like that one. Newsrooms see a presser moment and hunt for the day's tribal angle instead of listening to what's being said on the record. Pompeo used language borrowed from military exercises — "live exercise" is Pentagon terminology for a real-world scenario run as if it were a drill, with live stakes and observers. When he said it, he was either describing the government's mental model of COVID as something to be managed like a tabletop scenario, or he was obscuring the fact that no one had prepared for a live pandemic. Trump's interjection — "You should have let us know" — told you the president believed he hadn't been briefed on the scale. Every outlet chose the China narrative instead. What to watch: whether declassified internal memos from March and April 2020 ever surface showing what the intelligence community actually told the Oval Office, and when.

KELI Stay with courts. The Reason feed is tracking a Federal Appeals compendium — and mixed in with the prosecutor misconduct piece is a detention case where a defendant sat in jail without bond while prosecutors moved on a statute so narrow that the appellate court threw the whole thing out. Name the mechanism: a judge who didn't apply the standard for detention — that the government must show the defendant is a flight risk or a danger — and instead let the prosecutor's word substitute for evidence. These decisions don't make cable news. They become precedent.

HAST Different scale entirely. California Governor Gavin Newsom released four years of tax returns Friday, and the filing shows he and his wife brought in 1.39 million dollars in 2024, with over a million of that from investments. They paid 200,000 dollars for household staff that year alone. The release comes as federal investigators are probing his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a filmmaker. The returns are a move to preempt. What's structural here is that Newsom's positioning as a potential 2028 presidential candidate depends on his ability to manage perception around wealth and investigation simultaneously — releasing the returns is a transparency play, but it's also a signal that the household assets are being documented before something lands.

KELI On a different front — Pakistan's Balochistan Province. An explosion at a mine has trapped workers underground. Emergency crews are working to get oxygen into the shaft. This is an ongoing rescue operation — we've tracked two recoveries so far, others still missing. The mine blast happened in a region where safety oversight is thin and rescue infrastructure moves slowly.

KELI One other strand. President Trump said Friday he may pull the nomination of Todd Blanche — that's his lawyer and deputy counsel — from his current position. No clarity yet on the reasoning. A claim emerged from Trump that a ceasefire-and-hostage deal has been made between Hamas and Israel to disarm Hamas and withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza. That claim has not been confirmed by Israeli or Hamas statements. The U.S. economy is growing, but slower than the previous quarter — GDP data out Friday showed deceleration, not contraction.

HAST And the U.S. military is building doctrine around what it's learned from drones in Ukraine and the Middle East. Christian Science Monitor reported that tactics being deployed against Iranian targets and in the Ukrainian theater are now being codified into American military training — essentially the wars are becoming textbooks for the next generation of engagement.
