KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. It's Friday, May eighth. The time is three p.m. Central. I'm Keli, joined by Hast.

HAST Good to be here. We've got developments overseas, a court fight at home over military discipline, and a major healthcare tech deal to get to in the next few minutes.

KELI Let's start in the Mediterranean. Greek authorities are continuing their investigation into a mystery naval drone recovered from the Ionian Sea earlier this week. The device was found with explosives aboard, and Greek media reports suggest it could be Ukrainian or connected to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Officials haven't confirmed its origin or intent. It's the latest in a series of unexplained military equipment discoveries in European waters.

HAST Back in Washington, a federal appeals court is weighing whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth can punish a retired military officer for public speech. The case involves Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a retired Air Force pilot, and Hegseth's argument that military retirees forfeit certain speech rights if he deems their statements prejudicial to military order and discipline. The D.C. Circuit panel seemed skeptical of that broad authority during oral arguments this week.

KELI One more on this. Hast, the temptation here is to read this story a certain way. What should listeners watch for?

HAST Right. The simple read is going to be that this is about one defense secretary overreaching against one senator. The structural reality is that this case tests whether executive power over the military extends to controlling speech of retired officers in civilian life, and the judges' questions suggest they're concerned about that expansion. Watch for whether the court issues a narrow ruling—just about Kelly—or whether they explicitly constrain the military's speech authority over retirees. If we see a narrow ruling, it leaves the larger question unanswered for the next administration.

KELI So the court's language matters as much as who wins.

HAST Exactly right.

KELI Pharmaceutical company Roche has agreed to acquire PathAI, an artificial intelligence firm focused on pathology diagnostics, for seven hundred fifty million dollars. The deal aims to accelerate Roche's use of AI tools to help pathologists diagnose diseases more accurately and efficiently. PathAI has been working on machine learning models trained to identify patterns in tissue samples. The acquisition represents a significant corporate bet on AI's role in clinical decision-making.

HAST In Libya, the country's largest oil refinery has halted operations as fighting escalates around the facility. The Zawiya refinery, a critical source of fuel for the region, shut down as a precautionary measure after explosions and gunfire erupted nearby. Authorities declared an emergency as the conflict threatened the country's already strained energy infrastructure.

KELI Guatemala's new president has appointed a respected attorney general, a move observers say signals a commitment to rule of law over political retaliation. The appointment follows years of a justice system used to settle scores between rival factions. Experts say the choice suggests a shift toward institutional independence, though implementation will be the real test.

HAST And in the Persian Gulf, U.S. naval forces have fired on and disabled two Iranian tankers attempting to breach an American blockade of Iran's ports. The military said the action was necessary to enforce the embargo. It's another escalation amid efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire in the region.

KELI On this day in nineteen forty-five, French Army soldiers killed hundreds of Algerian civilians in the Sétif massacre, an event that intensified tensions leading toward Algeria's independence struggle.

KELI That's the Independent News Drop. We'll be back next hour. From Inkwell.
