Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Randall County Sheriff's Office has a man in custody after a shots-fired call on Gettysburg Road. No other details on injuries or the circumstances yet, but the arrest came fast on that one.

KELI The local angle underneath: we've got the Potter County Detention Center sitting at 92 percent capacity right now. Six hundred thirteen people in custody — five hundred forty-three at the PCDC itself, sixty-nine housed out at other facilities. That's up slightly from last week. So you're looking at a system that's running hot, and when arrest volume stays high, the pressure on that facility doesn't ease.

HAST Statewide, the governor's race is tightening in the money column. Greg Abbott outraised Gina Hinojosa six-to-one from July through late September, but here's the structural problem for the incumbent: his war chest topped a hundred million dollars, and he's burned through most of it. His polling lead has stayed narrow despite that spending advantage. The simple read is "Abbott's got more money." The reality is "Abbott's spending at a rate that suggests his campaign sees the race as closer than the public polls show."

KELI That's a checkable prediction. If Abbott stays in the six-to-one spending ratio through the final stretch, you'll know his internal numbers are signaling something the public numbers aren't.

HAST Trump's back in Texas tomorrow. Details on stops and timing are light right now, but the campaign presence is active ahead of the final month.

KELI Before we close, a history note.

HAST On this day in 1915, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria launched a coordinated offensive against Serbia under August von Mackensen — a major Central Powers push in the First World War.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a new companion piece on how the Latter-day Saints read the Trinity — three distinct beings, one in purpose, rather than three persons of one substance.

HAST It's an evenhanded look at the same question, decided the other way. At inkwell dot wiki, slash godhead.
