Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Heavy opening. Attorney General Todd Blanche, sworn in August tenth, is speaking at the RNC's first Midterm Convention in Dallas this week — they're calling it Trump-a-Palooza, one hundred nine speakers. Same week, the White House issued an executive order directing Blanche's Justice Department to prosecute state and local officials over election administration. Problem: DOJ policy classifies the Attorney General as a further restricted employee — he's barred from active partisan campaigning. Public Citizen filed a complaint with the Office of Special Counsel on August seventeenth. DOJ called it baseless. The RNC confirmed on September fifth that Blanche is giving a major address September ninth and tenth.

KELI Here's what you're actually watching. This is the counter-read. Most newsrooms will frame this as a dispute over whether Blanche broke the Hatch Act. That misses the structure. Blanche has two jobs now running in parallel: represent the Justice Department in court and on stage, and prosecute local officials for the same election conduct the executive order targets. The structural mechanism is this — he can use the podium to define what constitutes ineligible voting, then direct prosecutors to move against officials who disagree with that definition. The referee is supposed to be the Office of Special Counsel, which has no enforcement power against the Attorney General. What to watch: if Blanche names specific counties or officials in his Dallas remarks, or if DOJ files charges against any election administrator before November third, you're seeing the mechanism move.

HAST On Second Amendment doctrine now. The Supreme Court's decision in Wolford v. Lopez, released this term, rejects what legal scholars call the Vampire Rule — the idea that certain rights can be suspended during emergencies and then brought back. The ruling narrows the government's ability to restrict gun rights during declared crises. The opinion opens a line of challenge to a broad range of public safety restrictions tied to emergency declarations. This one moves slow, but the precedent is live in lower courts right now.

KELI Staying with courts. A high school student in Grand Prairie, Texas, lost the lead role in Little Shop of Horrors because the role is written as male. Administrators cited the state's ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs as the reason. The student, female, is now suing, alleging sex discrimination. The case hinges on whether the anti-DEI statute overrides Title IX protections against sex-based discrimination in education. Texas Education Agency hasn't weighed in publicly. This will move through district court before the school year ends.

HAST The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday, deciding against a hike days before the midterms. Inflation and affordability are the pivot points in next week's races. The Fed signaled a possible December increase, meaning rates will likely remain flat through the election cycle. Mortgage and credit card rates stay where they are.

KELI One story offshore. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of the former Brazilian president, landed in Miami this week after losing the presidential race. He's arrived in the United States, ending speculation about his whereabouts after he failed to comply with a court order to surrender his passports. He's under investigation in Brazil for alleged financial crimes tied to his father's administration.

HAST Before we close, a date marker. On this day in nineteen eighteen, a new Polish government was established in western Galicia, triggering the Polish–Ukrainian War.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. The same workshop behind this drop just published the Magnificat — the song Mary sings in Luke, where the powerful are pulled down from their thrones and the hungry are filled.

HAST It reads less like a carol than a manifesto. Find it at inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
