KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Election day is tomorrow. Potter and Randall counties have already seen 58,020 people vote early — that's over 15,000 more than the 2022 midterm, and 11,000 more than 2018. Statewide, Texas hit 7.7 million early votes. Higher than any midterm on record except 2018. But here's what matters underneath: the Panhandle's surge doesn't match state tone. Early turnout statewide is running below presidential-cycle pace. Our region is voting up. That's worth watching for what it says about engagement in competitive races — and whether that holds through tomorrow's close.

KELI The Randall County Sheriff's Office is flagging a fraud text hitting mail voters. People are getting messages claiming their ballot won't count unless they text back their driver's license and Social Security number. That's a scam. Elections officials will never ask for personal information by text. Delete it and report it to the sheriff's office if you get one. Potter and Randall, both counties — keep your guard up through the polls tomorrow.

HAST Sticking with Texas. ICE arrested more than 4,000 people during a ten-day mission across the state — part of the expanded Task Force Model that lets local police make immigration arrests during routine traffic stops and calls. Texas leads the nation in 287(g) agreements with ICE. As of September, 527 agreements — roughly one-fifth of all such agreements nationwide. That expanded authority is raising civil rights concerns among advocates, and the local police leadership has been split on how much immigration work falls inside their mission. The arrests are happening. The questions about oversight and local capacity aren't settled.

KELI Weather and infrastructure next. A storm moved through Keyes, Oklahoma on Sunday — Cimarron County, just north of us — and left damage across parts of the town. Exact scope and injuries still being assessed by local officials.

HAST On the roads here, I-40 at Nelson Street is going down to two lanes starting this week for bridge maintenance. Both directions. Expect delays. Work runs into early next year. I-27 between Bell and Washington has lane closures for patching throughout the week, and the right lane eastbound on I-40 from Westline to Adkisson is closed for repair.

KELI One date marker. On this day in 1956, Soviet troops massed on the Hungarian border as a counter-government formed in Moscow — the final move before the Soviet assault on the Hungarian Revolution.

HAST That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a close reading of the opening of John's Gospel — in the beginning was the Word — and the single article-less phrase the Trinity debate still turns on.

HAST Grammar, not slogan. At inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
