KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Heavy diplomatic hour. Trump's been talking about Irish reunification — four times in two days — and Downing Street just read the law back at him in public.
KELI Let's go there first. From our Ground News desk: Trump spent the weekend at his Doonbeg resort saying reunification is inevitable and should happen now. He said it to President Catherine Connolly when they met, he said it at a business event, and he said it twice more at the golf course. The direct quote — "The way I look at it, it's going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now." He told people he had massive support for the idea. Downing Street's response, through a PM Andy Burnham spokesperson, was terse: "not aware that there is majority public support." That's the statutory test. Schedule 1 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 — the actual law that governs this — says the Secretary of State can call a border poll if it appears likely a majority would vote for reunification. Downing Street just put the legal threshold in the public record.
HAST So here's what most newsrooms will file: Trump wants reunification, the UK said no. Door closes, story moves on.
KELI But the mechanism is the opposite. Trump said "may as well happen now." The UK response wasn't a political opinion — it was a recitation of the statute. They're not saying no. They're saying show us the numbers. If Trump's right that there's majority support, the law requires a poll. If he's wrong, nothing happens. Watch the next seventy-two hours for Irish polling on reunification — if a credible poll shows majority support among Northern Irish voters, the Secretary of State has a legal obligation. That's the checkable piece.
HAST Los Angeles just elected its first openly socialist mayor. Nithya Raman beat Karen Bass on Thursday. She's joining a wave — Zohran Mamdani in New York, Katie Wilson in Seattle, Janeese Lewis George in D.C. won by landslide this week. The thing is, Raman didn't run the full socialist banner. The Intercept's reporting on how she navigated that, and the pressure she's inheriting — Bass left the city fractured on homeless services, the budget, and police reform.
KELI Argentina's monthly inflation dropped below two percent. That's down from twelve percent three years ago when Javier Milei took office. The central bank was technically insolvent. Reason's December cover piece walks through how he got there — spending cuts, ending price controls, a devaluation, and a lot of political capital burned. Sovereign spreads are at eight-year lows. The thing to watch is whether it holds through 2027 if commodity prices move.
HAST The U.S. Center for SafeSport is launching a new system to alert schools and youth sports clubs when coaches banned for sexual abuse allegations try to work with kids elsewhere. This came after ProPublica and the Washington Post reported on gaps in child protection — basically, a coach could be suspended in one league and show up coaching elsewhere the next week. SafeSport has the authority to investigate and suspend; now they're building notification infrastructure.
KELI One moment before we close. Ten years ago this week, Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, defeating Hillary Clinton, the first woman to carry a major party's nomination.
HAST That race reshaped everything that came after.
