KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Good morning. Two arrests in Randall County after stolen property turned up in April. Amarillo Police stopped a vehicle on the road pulling one of two trailers taken from Cemetery Road weeks earlier. Inside that trailer and the vehicle, officers found additional stolen items. Jessica McKillip and Leticia Delgado were booked into Randall County Jail on theft charges. The owners spotted their own trailer being hauled and called it in — that's what broke the case open.
KELI Counter on that one: theft arrests make the local sheet, and they should. But the real pattern here is response lag. April to now is four months. Property crime stays low on the priority list until someone spots their own stuff moving down the road. Panhandle law enforcement is understaffed and reactive by design — not by choice, but by budget. Watch whether Randall County commissioners allocate real dollars to detective caseload or patrol presence at the next budget cycle in September. That's the test of whether this arrest changes anything structural.
HAST Separate incident — the City of Amarillo discharged treated wastewater Wednesday morning in a non-residential area about a quarter-mile south of the Harrington Power Generation Facility, half a mile west of Lakeside Drive. The City says repairs are underway and there's no threat to public or private drinking water. No timeline on when the discharge stopped or when repairs finish.
KELI Texas tax-free weekend starts today and runs through Sunday at midnight. Most clothing, footwear, school supplies, backpacks, and diapers under one hundred dollars are exempt from sales tax. You can shop in stores, online, by phone, or mail — full list of what qualifies is at TexasTaxHoliday.org. That window closes Sunday.
HAST Up at the Capitol, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is openly blaming Governor Greg Abbott for not pushing back hard enough on data center development across Texas. Miller says Republican candidates will lose statewide elections because of the backlash to rapid data center buildout — power demand, water use, land conversion. Abbott's office has not responded to Miller's criticism. The data center issue is real in the Panhandle, where land is cheap and grid access is strong. Watch whether this complaint from a sitting Republican official signals cracks in the party's growth-first posture heading into next year's slate of races.
KELI Before we close, a history note.
