Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. I'm Keli, joined by Hast.

HAST Morning. We're leading hard today — federal court, criminal justice, and a major reporting gap that shaped how the country sees reform.

KELI From our Ground News desk: in December 2018, Trump backed the First Step Act. It passed 87 to 12 in the Senate. Freed thousands of nonviolent federal prisoners, reduced mandatory minimums across the board. Trump said he was thrilled to support a bipartisan bill that would make communities safer and give former inmates a second chance. It was real legislation with real votes. And the press dissolved it in 72 hours because it didn't fit the frame.

HAST The frame being what — that Trump was authoritarian, full stop.

KELI Right. So what counted as news wasn't the law. It was the narrative. By 2024, neither party made criminal justice reform a centerpiece. The story disappeared because the press never let it stay. That's how narratives determine what counts as true, even when the Senate voted 87 to 12.

HAST Watch for the same mechanism this week — watch what gets covered for three days and what vanishes. That's your test.

KELI Now to today's hard news. The Intercept is reporting that federal prosecutors blocked a ballistics expert from testifying for a defendant in Prairieland. The man got 100 years in prison for attempted murder. The expert had a ricochet theory that would have undercut the charges. The judge intervened. The jury never heard it. Case is in appeal.

HAST So the evidence gaps didn't reach the jury because the defendant's expert never got access to examine the scene.

KELI Correct. No cross-examination of the ballistics, no alternative theory on the stand. Jurors heard one trajectory, one interpretation, and a sentence that stuck.

HAST That feeds straight into ProPublica's new reporting: more than 500 U.S. citizens have been detained in Trump's immigration crackdown. Handcuffed, held at gunpoint, no citizenship check before the hold.

KELI ProPublica has the names, the dates, the agency logs. ICE detained people with passports, birth certificates, military IDs. One man spent three weeks in custody before they confirmed he was born in Texas. Another was held at gunpoint for eight hours. The caseload is still climbing.

HAST Different power structure, same question: who checks the checker.

KELI Sticking overseas — Al Jazeera reports Trump has approved a firing squad execution for Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood attacker who killed 13 soldiers in 2009. Pentagon confirmed the order. Hasan has been on death row since 2013. This is the first execution order in years.

HAST That one's moving fast now. We'll see if there are appeals or stays filed in the next 48 hours.

KELI Different register entirely — California officials called Trump a traitor after he said at a rally that he'd let Iran take out Los Angeles and San Diego. He was arguing the price was worth keeping the world safe. California's governor, other state leaders, fired back hard. The framing became personal insult rather than a parsing of what he meant by letting a hostile nation strike U.S. cities.

HAST So the headline became the outrage, not the statement.

KELI Right. And before we close, a history note. On this day in 1995, scientists announced they'd discovered the first planet orbiting another star — 51 Pegasi b. Changed everything about how we think about life in the universe.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a new companion piece on how the Latter-day Saints read the Trinity — three distinct beings, one in purpose, rather than three persons of one substance.

HAST It's an evenhanded look at the same question, decided the other way. At inkwell dot wiki, slash godhead.
