Quote: I do not recommend that you wear a mask. Eight weeks later, April, he's pushing mask mandates for the public. In 2022, under oath, he was asked what study changed his mind. He couldn't name one.

KELI So here's the structural read underneath what most newsrooms called guidance evolution. Fauci had private certainty — masks don't work — backed by what he stated as fact. Then he had public certainty — mandates required — stated with equal conviction. The press treated the reversal as a normal course correction. What they did not do was serious investigative work on the gap itself. Why the private and public positions diverged. What actually triggered the shift. That's the story that stayed buried. In the coming weeks, watch whether any outlet circles back to name the study. Because if there is one, it's been four years and nobody — including Fauci under oath — has produced it.

HAST Texas now. Minnesota is suing to force extradition of an ICE agent named Christian Castro. On January 14th, Castro shot a Venezuelan man. The state charges him with assault and lying about the circumstances. If Minnesota doesn't get a restraining order from a judge, Castro walks. The case sits at the intersection of federal immigration authority and state criminal law — Texas holding the agent, Minnesota demanding he face charges for the shooting itself.

KELI On a different front. The Seattle Times killed a sports column by Matt Calkins this week. Calkins had written about public reaction to comments made by WNBA player Sophie Cunningham. The paper spiked the piece. Calkins resigned. This is a continuing story — we've seen it before in other newsrooms — where editorial staff override beat reporters and bury work the reporter believes is necessary. What matters here is not Calkins' individual choice, but the signal it sends about what gets published and what gets silenced at a major metro outlet.

HAST Heavier next. Bolivia's President Rodrigo Paz fired his economy minister, Jose Gabriel Espinoza, days after the legislature censured him. The move comes during unrest over economic reform. No new cabinet member named yet. The country is still in motion on what replaces the policy that triggered the conflict.

KELI Staying with power shifts. The White House is formally reviewing a proposal to charge international students a hundred thousand dollars to work in the United States after graduation. The fee would apply to the Optional Practical Training program — OPT — which currently allows graduates to stay and work for up to three years. This is a continuing story. Trump promised green cards to international students during the campaign. This proposal moves in the opposite direction entirely.

HAST Iran next. A top Iranian official told state media that U.S. focus on economic warfare proves the Trump administration has failed militarily. The statement responds to Trump's threats to crush Iran economically. Khamenei has said he's in perfect health. The back-and-forth is positioning for what comes next on sanctions and military posture, but no change in capability or deployment on either side has been announced.
