HAST Budget season is here. Amarillo City Council starts workshops this week — rescheduled from late July — with the regular meeting Tuesday. Potter County meets today, Randall County tomorrow, and both are looking at tax rate. Canyon's got a public hearing on its proposed budget today, tax rate hearing next week.
KELI Counter-read on that: the simple story is "routine budget meetings." The structural piece is that three county and municipal bodies are moving through tax-rate and spending votes in a compressed window, which means citizens who want to show up have overlap and conflict. The Council's decision Tuesday, Potter's decision today, Randall's Tuesday — if you're tracking across all three, you're at three different rooms in three days. Watch the attendance numbers and the public comment time allotted. If the meetings are quiet, it's not because the budget is settled — it's because the public doesn't know the windows line up.
HAST Two active fires in Oldham County as of yesterday evening. The Canadian River Fire is 330 acres and 95 percent contained. The Brown Fire is 300 acres and only 10 percent contained. Both are north of Boys Ranch. The A&M Forest Service is still working containment on the Brown Fire.
KELI Canyon is in stage one drought conditions now. Water demand has topped 65 percent of the city's production capacity for five straight days. Canyon is cutting watering at parks and the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course and asking residents to follow a voluntary schedule — even-numbered addresses water Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday; odd-numbered addresses Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
HAST Two school boards meet today. Amarillo ISD's regular board meeting is followed by a training session with demographic updates from consultant Bob Templeteon at 6 p.m. at the Rod Schroder Education Support Center Board Room. Canyon ISD also meets.
