KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, joined by Hast.

HAST Heavy voting day ahead. Let's start with the race that'll shape the Panhandle for the next two years.

KELI Republican state Rep. Caroline Fairly is asking voters in House District 87 to send her back to Austin. She's running on education, water, and rural issues — the kind that hit the High Plains directly. District 87 covers a big swath of the Panhandle. Water rights and school funding are structural questions out here, not talking points. Fairly's been in the seat, so voters know her record on those votes. The election's Tuesday.

HAST Counter-read on that one: coverage of rural legislative races tends to run soft — "candidate focuses on local issues" — without naming what those votes actually meant. Fairly's had two terms to cast recorded votes on Robin Hood school funding, water board appointments, and agricultural tax policy. That's the real measure. Expect to see generic "education and water" language in final ads. What matters is how she voted on the bills that moved those dollars. Check her record on the Texas Legislature Online database before you vote. Prediction: turnout in the 87th will be lower than statewide, and whoever wins will claim a mandate on water.

KELI Texas Panhandle drought conditions kept contracting this week — third straight week of improvement. Exceptional drought reached its smallest footprint in eleven weeks, according to the latest report. Statewide, conditions are loosening. But the Panhandle was hit harder and longer than most of Texas, so even with the gains, we're still watching closely.

HAST Staying with state power — the railroad commission race just crossed a money threshold. Bo French and Jon Rosenthal combined for more than a million dollars in their latest fundraising period. Second-highest haul of the cycle. That's advertising, mailers, and consulting. The RRC sets oil and gas regulation in Texas, so the spending tells you how much the industry cares about this seat.

KELI On a different front, James Talarico held a rally at the Texas Panhandle Regional Democratic Headquarters in Amarillo yesterday. The space overflowed, so they set up speakers outside. He's the U.S. Senate candidate touring the state. Election day is Tuesday.

HAST And one more from the state — a detransition clinic opened in Texas this week, marking the first of its kind in the nation. The clinic serves patients seeking to reverse medical transition. That's a live political issue in Texas right now, with the legislature moving fast on those bills.

KELI Before we close, a history note. Fifty years ago this week, Aeroflot Flight 136 crashed near Krasnoyarsk in the Soviet Union, killing nineteen.

HAST That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. The same workshop behind this drop just published the Magnificat — the song Mary sings in Luke, where the powerful are pulled down from their thrones and the hungry are filled.

HAST It reads less like a carol than a manifesto. Find it at inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
