KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Morning. We're looking at a light local briefing, so we'll move through what's coming and then pivot to state business that touches the Panhandle.
KELI Start here: West Texas A&M University's Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business is opening applications for the Future Founders Academy. High school juniors who design AI products can apply through September 4th. The program pulls from what looks like a real gap — students building, not just consuming, machine-learning tools early. No cost mentioned in the brief, but worth checking if the university is subsidizing seats or if there's a tuition wall.
HAST On a different front, overdose awareness Saturday. Texas Panhandle Overdose Awareness is hosting an event at Sam Houston Park from 5 to 9 p.m. The stated aim is to remember those lost, honor those still fighting, and celebrate lives saved. Panhandle counties have tracked rising opioid mortality over the past five years — this is direct community response to that pressure.
KELI The weather is running hot. Highs today around 102 degrees, sunny until late afternoon when isolated storms may form. Light winds early, gusty later. Heat advisory conditions, so if you're working outside, hydration and shade are not optional.
HAST Sticking with community space: City of Amarillo and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas unveiled a new outdoor fitness court at John Ward Memorial Park Thursday. The National Fitness Campaign backs these installations in underserved areas — free equipment, open access. Small infrastructure, but it's a direct counter to the average adult inactivity rate Blue Cross cited.
KELI Texas piece now. East Texas is sitting on a significant lithium deposit, and the state is still writing the rulebook on how mining and production get regulated. As the U.S. pushes to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, Texas companies are moving to capitalize. The question for the Panhandle is whether water use, permitting, and environmental oversight get locked in before the rush accelerates. Watch the Railroad Commission on that one.
HAST One more: the USDA is expanding border surveillance to combat the New World screwworm. That's a direct livestock threat on the southern border and into Texas ranch country. Screwworms are parasitic, they infest wounds on cattle and sheep, and they spread fast. USDA presence at the border is the backstop — if that fails, Panhandle ranchers see the disease jump north.
KELI Before we close, a history note. On this day in 1995, Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 crashed near Carrollton, Georgia, after an engine failure during a diversion. Nine of the 29 people on board were killed.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version runs on a short set of stated rules it calls Canons — the principles every translation choice has to answer to.
HAST One of them: where the text leaves a question open, keep it open. Read them at inkwell dot wiki, slash giv, slash canon.
