HAST Labor Day weekend starts today across the Panhandle. Texas Parks and Wildlife and Game Wardens are moving fast on boating safety — the push matters because the lakes fill up hard this time of year, and so do the accident calls. Last year, the state counted nineteen fatal boating crashes in Texas. This weekend, wardens will be on the water watching for life jackets, alcohol, and operator licenses. The water's still warm enough to pull people in fast.

KELI Counter on that: the safety push works when enforcement is visible, but most of the Panhandle lakes — Meredith, Greenbelt, and the smaller impounds — don't have year-round coverage. Wardens rotate in for holiday weekends and then thin out. So what you're watching for is whether the visible presence this weekend actually sticks into next month when families still come out and fewer eyes are on the water. If enforcement is real and not just a holiday show, citation counts and safety reports should hold steady through September.

HAST Weather shapes the weekend too. Highs near ninety across the central and western Panhandle, mild overnight lows in the upper sixties and low seventies. Best chance for afternoon and evening thundershowers runs through our western counties — the kind of pop-up storms that can catch people out on the water. National Weather Service is flagging that possibility.

KELI Staying with state moves now. The Texas Education Agency rescored STAAR exams across eleven districts this week, and grades shifted upward — some districts moved to better letter ratings after the agency review. The state says it's an annual accuracy check on the test results. No numbers on which districts yet, but the Tribune is tracking which school systems landed the bump.
