KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Good morning. A Randall County grand jury indicted a 29-year-old Amarillo man on Wednesday on a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14. Justice Alexander Veale was arrested October 26th. The indictment came down this week, and he remains in custody.
KELI That's the continuing case we've been tracking. The counter-read here: when a single-count indictment lands for a crime of this severity, the simple framing is "arrest made, justice moving." The structural reality is slower. A continuous-abuse charge means investigators have documented a pattern over time—multiple acts, likely multiple opportunities for disclosure or intervention that didn't happen. That shifts the weight from one moment to systemic gaps. Watch whether this case surfaces questions about mandatory reporting in schools or childcare settings in Potter or Randall County over the next few weeks. That's where the real story lives.
HAST Turning to state politics. Democrats took control of the Texas State Board of Education after Tuesday's election. Going in, half of voters didn't know who the Democratic statewide candidates were. They won anyway—and now Democrats will run the agencies that handle education policy, the railroad commission, and the land office. That's a shift in who sets the terms for schools across the High Plains.
KELI Different scale, but a Texas criminal sentencing out of the Minute: a Mexican national received a life sentence this week. Details are light from the wire, but that's in the docket.
HAST On employment: Lockheed Martin settled allegations of employment discrimination. The company operates in Fort Worth and across Texas. Settlement terms haven't been released yet.
KELI On this day in 2012, Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay politician elected to the United States Senate.
