HAST Heavy rescue weekend in the canyons. Randall County Fire Department and Canyon Fire pulled a person out of Ceta Canyon who'd fallen about 75 feet. Crews used rope rescue equipment to reach them and bring them up. The Randall County Fire Department says it runs roughly one rope rescue a week in the canyons around here — they got specialized training back in May to handle exactly this kind of call. Person's condition wasn't detailed in the report, but the crews got them out alive.

KELI That's the kind of call that takes precision. Now, here's the thing most people don't see: canyon rescues in the Panhandle have become routine enough that departments have had to formalize the training. That sounds like a success story until you step back — it means our canyons are seeing a steady climb in falls and people in distress. The narrative you'll hear is "great rescue," and that's true. The structural read underneath is that we're running one of these operations every seven days. HAST Potter County Detention Center released its weekly population report this morning. This is the third update on jail numbers we've tracked. No specifics on the count or movement yet, but if there's a spike or a notable trend, we'll dig into it once the full numbers come through.

KELI Two fires classified this week. One happened just after midnight Saturday in the 1400 block of SW 10th. Firefighters found a trash pile burning against the back of a single-story commercial building — multi-unit. Smoke damage to the building, no injuries. Amarillo Fire Department classified it undetermined. Then Sunday morning around 5 a.m., house fire in the 1100 block of NW 12th. The property was vacant, but neighbors got evacuated as a precaution. Fire Marshal's still investigating that one.

HAST Canyon sentencing watch: Kevin Hunt, the Canyon teenager who pleaded guilty to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, was scheduled for sentencing today. That's been pushed to October 20th. Court's waiting for an addendum from Hunt's probation officer that lays out additional sentencing considerations. So that case holds.
