KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Good morning. Texas school funding first. The state has a structural problem: it caps how much money goes to fast-growing districts, even when enrollment jumps. Rural districts in particular are hitting million-dollar gaps between what they're legally owed and what Austin sends them. Some are turning to charter schools to fill the shortfall. The mechanism is simple — the state's Robin Hood formulas were built for stable enrollment. Growth breaks the model. Watch whether the Legislature addresses this in the next session, or whether charters keep filling the gap instead of the state fixing the cap.

KELI Staying with schools, but different angle. Attorney General Paxton is investigating UnitedHealth Insurance, and State Comptroller Huffines has announced a slate of school districts getting fiscal audits. The Comptroller's office is looking at spending patterns — the stated focus is administrative bloat. No Panhandle districts have been named yet in the public list, but this is the state moving money-side first. Expect those audit results to surface by year-end.

HAST Boys Ranch is hosting its eighty-second annual rodeo and fall festival on October seventeenth. Five riders are featured as Faces of the Rodeo this year, including a competitor named Malaya. Full lineup is up at the Boys Ranch website.

KELI Wayland Baptist University is awarding its Pioneer Alumni Educator Award during Homecoming, October eighteenth through the twenty-fifth, to Dr. West, a former Amarillo ISD educator and WBU graduate. The award recognizes graduates who've served their communities through teaching or educational administration.

HAST Before we close, a history note. On this day in two-thousand, the USS Cole, a Navy destroyer, was struck by al-Qaeda suicide bombers in the Port of Aden, killing seventeen crew members and wounding at least thirty-nine.

KELI That's the Amarillo News Drop. Full script and sources at inkwell.wiki/news/amarillo.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. A principle from Gil's Intelligent Version worth borrowing: where a source genuinely leaves a question open, an honest translation preserves the ambiguity instead of quietly deciding for you.

HAST They call it The Refused Verdict. At inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
