HAST Heavy morning in Potter County. Texas DPS troopers, Amarillo police, and the sheriff's office were in a vehicle pursuit around three forty-five Monday morning. The driver, Stacey Lerke, forty-nine, crashed and exited with what law enforcement described as an assault rifle. Troopers ordered him to drop it. Lerke didn't. Troopers opened fire. He was treated at scene and transported — condition not yet released by the department.

KELI The standard line here is "officer-involved shooting" — but let's get under that. Lerke was armed, refused commands, and created the immediate lethal threat himself. What matters for the listener: DPS will file its own after-action review separate from APD's, because it's a state agency. Potter County District Attorney will decide whether to present this to a grand jury. That decision should come inside two weeks. Watch for whether the DA's office comments before the review is done — that timing tells you something about how the initial investigation is trending.

HAST Staying in the Panhandle, a fire near Boys Ranch in Oldham County was burning two hundred acres as of five p.m. today, zero percent contained. Texas A&M Forest Service reports on the Canadian River Fire. Wind conditions and containment lines are the next twelve hours.

KELI Different scale, but moving. A natural gas data center is in planning stages for West Texas — this is a continuing story, but the new angle is infrastructure. Data centers need massive power draw and cooling. West Texas has the gas supply and the land. What changes the region: tax base goes up locally, power grid load goes up regionally, and water usage questions are going to surface. The Railroad Commission will have a hand in permitting. Watch the RRC docket in the coming weeks.

HAST Texas regulators are also beginning to require data centers to pay for their own grid upgrades instead of passing costs to ratepayers. That's a structural shift. For the Panhandle, where wind and solar have been the grid story, this makes data centers compete harder for location on existing infrastructure. That matters for both rural counties bidding for facilities and for ERCOT's load forecasts.
