Independent News Drop

KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Three men in custody after a fatal shooting in Amarillo Thursday night. Skyler Lee Mensen, thirty-three, arrested for murder. Jesse James Franklin, thirty-four, taken on a narcotics violation and a federal hold. Dennis Charles Carlson, forty-nine, arrested for a parole violation — all booked by the Randall County Sheriff's Office. The victim, identified as Skyler Lee Mensen, thirty-three, was killed in what police are still investigating. Amarillo P.D. is asking anyone with information to call the department or crime stoppers.

KELI Counter on that one: local news will frame this as three men arrested, case moving. The structural piece is the federal hold on Franklin — that means feds are already involved, likely narcotics trafficking or organized crime angle the initial reporting isn't naming yet. Watch the next forty-eight hours for either a federal indictment or a press release explaining why the Sheriff's Office is holding him past state charges. That'll tell you the real weight of what happened Thursday.

HAST Staying in the courthouse — Texas juvenile justice director Shandra Carter resigned from her role running the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. She's held the executive director position since twenty twenty-two. The Tribune says it's not clear why she left. No statement from the agency on the reasons for her departure.

KELI Different front. Nearly seven hundred new border enforcement cases filed in Texas this month alone. The Texas Minute reports the state's fraud portal is tracking cases under the state's border security push. No breakdown yet on whether those are deportation proceedings, smuggling charges, or trafficking cases — but that volume in thirty-one days is what the state is calling active enforcement.

HAST A Cuban national was sentenced to seventeen years in federal court for human trafficking and transporting women across state lines. Conviction came out of the Southern District of Texas. No other details on the victims or the trafficking network yet.

KELI West Texas A&M is in homecoming week out in Canyon. The school's running a parade and a party on Twenty-sixth Street leading up to a game against Western New Mexico on Saturday night. If you're heading out that way, traffic's going to be heavier than usual around the campus.

HAST One date marker. Seventy-six years ago today, in nineteen fifty, the People's Liberation Army ended its military operations in Tibet.

KELI Before we close, a word from Inkwell. Gil's Intelligent Version has a close reading of the opening of John's Gospel — in the beginning was the Word — and the single article-less phrase the Trinity debate still turns on.

HAST Grammar, not slogan. At inkwell dot wiki, slash giv.
