HAST Heavy start. May 2017. The Oval Office. Trump told Russia he wasn't worried about election interference because the US does the same in other countries. Classified memo. American press locked out. Russian state photographer inside. This was the day after he fired the FBI director investigating Russian election interference. It contradicted the entire stated premise of the Mueller investigation that followed. The memo showed up in reporting once, briefly, two years later. Then it was buried.

KELI From our Ground News desk — here's what most newsrooms did with this: they led with the firing. The scandal was Comey. The memo, the statement to Russia, the equivalence he was drawing between American and Russian interference — that became a footnote to the personnel move. But structurally, this reveals something harder: Trump was signaling to Moscow, on day one of the interference crisis, that he didn't see it as a crisis. He saw it as reciprocal. That framing — mutual wrongdoing, mutual shrug — shaped every investigation, every denial, every refusal to act on intelligence that followed. Watch in coming weeks and months how any new Russia reporting gets framed. If it lands as "Russian aggression," we're in one political fight. If it lands as "tit-for-tat Cold War habit," we're in another. The memo's burial tells you which frame won.

HAST Staying overseas, Como, Italy. The city's mayor, Alessandro Rapinese, was hit by an electric bike and issued a blanket ban on them. He told the local press he knows what it's like to be hit by one of these machines. No licensing, no helmet requirement in the ban — just gone from the streets. The city council voted it through Thursday.

KELI Different scale, but structure matters. Senate races. Texas and Iowa are now toss-ups. Republican seats. The Washington Times is calling them off the safe list as of Thursday morning. That means money flows differently. It means national party attention shifts. Both races will move money out of other states. Watch where the RNC puts resources in the next ten days.

HAST Back stateside on energy. East Texas lithium. The state sits on a significant deposit. Companies are preparing to extract and process it as the US tries to reduce reliance on foreign battery supply. But Texas has no regulatory framework for it yet. That's the continuing piece — we've touched on this before. The state Capitol hasn't written the rules. So miners are moving forward in a vacuum. By the time regulation arrives, the infrastructure's already on the ground. That's how you end up with power ahead of oversight.

KELI Public health now. Cyclosporiasis cases hit a record this year. The outbreak is testing state and local food-safety response. But the federal agencies that fund that work took budget cuts last year from the Trump administration. So the system responding to this outbreak is running lighter than it was. More cases. Fewer resources. That math compounds.

HAST School safety in France. Parents are reassessing after reports of abuse in after-school programs in Paris. Schools are already responding with new protocols, but the reporting suggests the abuse was known and slow-walked. Parents are asking now, not later.
