KELI We start in the Gulf of Oman, where authorities are trying to contain a large oil spill from a tanker called the Caroline Bezengi. The vessel ran into trouble off the Omani coast, and the spill is described as extensive. The ship is believed to be part of Russia's shadow fleet, the collection of vessels Moscow uses to move oil outside the reach of Western sanctions.

HAST The phrase shadow fleet has been in circulation for about two years now, but this is what it looks like when the operational risk of that arrangement materializes. These ships often carry older insurance, sail under flags of convenience, and have murky ownership chains. The environmental liability lands on the coastal state, in this case Oman, which had nothing to do with the sanctions regime that created the incentive structure.

KELI Still in Russia. A Moscow court has barred the country's only registered liberal, anti-war party from standing in next month's parliamentary elections. The ruling means the party will not appear on the ballot at all.

HAST The structural fact here is straightforward. Russia is holding an election in which the one organized political formation that opposes the war has been removed from the ballot by a court decision. That is the condition under which the vote will take place.

KELI Staying on the question of Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, which connects directly to the pressure Russia's shadow fleet was already navigating. Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, said over the weekend that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is in, quote, perfect health, and that Khamenei had conveyed a message of unity and cohesion.

HAST The statement is notable because it was issued at all. Governments typically do not volunteer a leader's health status unless questions about it are already circulating. No independent confirmation of Khamenei's condition has been made available.

KELI And on the subject of Iran and American political pressure, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie appeared on ABC's This Week and compared President Trump to Jimmy Carter. His specific argument was that Iran, by making demands about reopening the Strait of Hormuz, is effectively holding Trump hostage in the same way Iran held Carter hostage in 1979 and 1980. RNC chair Joe Gruters, appearing separately on NewsNation, declined to engage with the substance of that comparison.

HAST Christie is a former ally making a targeted rhetorical attack on a sensitive historical parallel. Whether the analogy holds is a separate question from why he chose it. The Strait of Hormuz is a real chokepoint for global oil shipments, so the stakes underneath the political theater are concrete.

KELI Also in U.S. politics. Republican congressman Max Miller of Ohio will remain on the November ballot despite serious domestic abuse accusations. The legal deadline for Ohio Republicans to replace him passed today at four p.m. Miller said he would not step aside, and RNC chair Gruters confirmed the party will fund Miller's campaign, saying, quote, the RNC will support our nominees. When pressed, Gruters described divorce as one of the worst experiences a person can go through.

HAST The RNC chair was asked a direct question about domestic abuse accusations and answered with a characterization of divorce proceedings. Those are not the same thing, and the non-answer is the answer worth noting.

KELI Now to Texas. A two-year-old named Annelise Camp has died. She drowned in a hotel pool in May. Her family sued Texas Children's Hospital to block brain death testing, and that legal fight drew national attention. The hospital has not commented on her death.

HAST The legal question the case raised, specifically whether and when a hospital can conduct brain death testing over family objection, is not resolved by her death. Texas law in this area is unsettled, and similar cases will come back.

KELI On COVID-19 origins, a piece in STAT News argues that holding Anthony Fauci responsible for not determining how the pandemic started is a category error. The author's framing: Fauci directed research funding from Washington. The evidence, whatever it is, is in China. The piece compares it to blaming a Washington detective for failing to solve a crime in Wuhan.

HAST The on-the-record fact is that no public health agency in the United States has had access to the primary source material, meaning the relevant samples, databases, and facilities in China, that would be needed to settle the question. The debate in American media has largely proceeded without that access point being centered.

KELI A brief item on media mechanics. The WNBA's Sophie Cunningham made unsolicited comments about transgender athletes to ESPN last month. She has since said she wants to get back to basketball. Right-wing media has continued the story well past the point where Cunningham herself stepped back from it. Mediaite is tracking how that dynamic is playing out across newsletters and commentary outlets.

HAST The pattern is familiar: a subject makes a comment, expresses regret, attempts to disengage, and the story continues to move through partisan media channels without them. That gap between the speaker's intent and the coverage's trajectory is the media story, not the original comment.

KELI Finally. A skiff off the Alaska coast ran into distress. A nearby cruise ship responded and helped the people on board. The crew of Mark Zuckerberg's yacht, which was in the area, did not respond to the call for help. A spokesperson for Zuckerberg said the yacht's crew did not hear it.

HAST There is no confirmed account of what happened on the yacht. There is a confirmed account of who did respond. That is the record as it stands.

KELI We close with something from the natural world. Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinction of any country on the planet, but researchers are pointing to at least one species that has stabilized, offering what they describe as a model for conservation under difficult conditions.

HAST The story does not resolve the larger trend. Australia's extinction rate remains the headline fact. The single species offers a method, not a conclusion.
