KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. It's Monday, June first. The time is six a.m. Central. I'm Keli, with Hast.

HAST Good morning. We've got the latest from the Middle East, weather disruption across the Mountain West, and a look ahead at tomorrow's primary elections. Let's go.

KELI The dispatch at Inkwell starts with a video posted by Israel's national security minister last week. Itamar Ben-Gvir recorded what he called a tour of a facility holding detainees—zip-tied individuals, he said, with the national anthem playing on loudspeakers. In the video, he welcomed people with the phrase "we are the landlords here." The clip wasn't leaked. Ben-Gvir posted it himself. Prime Minister Netanyahu responded publicly, saying the conduct didn't reflect Israeli values. Kan News later reported that Israel's prisons chief had approved the tour. Here's what the coverage cycle did: The video went global, newsrooms led with the rebuking of Ben-Gvir, and within forty-eight hours, the structural question underneath had largely faded—who actually authorizes detention facility access and media presence when the National Security Council oversees police operations. That governance gap is what will matter if this happens again. Listen for whether lawmakers ask about authorization chains in the coming days, or whether the story closes once the narrative moves on.

HAST Staying overseas for a moment. Russian forces carried out a massive strike on Ukrainian cities overnight, firing missiles and drones at targets across the country. At least fourteen people are confirmed dead. Rescue crews are digging through rubble in multiple cities, looking for people still trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Ukrainian officials haven't yet released a full damage assessment, but early reports indicate strikes hit civilian infrastructure and residential areas.

KELI On a different front now. Denver is dealing with the aftermath of a powerful hailstorm that swept through the region Sunday, with hailstones reportedly the size of golf balls in some areas. The storm caused widespread disruption—damaged vehicles, rooftops, and windows. Power outages were reported across parts of the city. The weather system has moved east, and the National Weather Service is tracking its path through the afternoon hours.

HAST Back stateside, Texas school leaders are telling the state legislature that even with an eight-and-a-half-billion-dollar funding boost approved last year, public schools still face serious budget pressures. At hearings this week, superintendents outlined ongoing difficulties with teacher recruitment and retention, and gaps in special education services. The funding increase was meant to address years of underfunding, but administrators say it hasn't closed the gap between what schools have and what they actually need to operate.

KELI We're watching primary elections tomorrow. Six states—California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, South Dakota, and New Mexico—hold contests. Several competitive races on both sides will help shape the general election landscape. The California primary will draw particular attention, given the state's size and the number of races in play. We'll have full coverage as polls close.

HAST Quick follow-up on something we've covered: the shift away from in-person doctor's office waiting rooms. An emergency physician writing for Stat News this week argues it's time to rethink how patients enter the health care system altogether—moving more initial appointments and triage work into virtual settings. The piece is part of a broader conversation in medicine about redesigning the patient experience.

KELI Before we close, a history note. On this day in 2008, a fire broke out on the back lot of Universal Studios in Los Angeles, destroying the King Kong Encounter attraction and a massive archive of master recordings and film materials—though the full scope of what was lost wasn't publicly understood until more than a decade later.

HAST That's the Independent News Drop. We'll be back this evening. From Inkwell.
