KELI From Inkwell, this is the Amarillo News Drop. I'm Keli, with Hast.
HAST Potter County voters need to know this right now. Election Administration is warning that some people in the area have received unsolicited mail-in ballot applications in the mail. Potter County does not send those out unless you request one by phone. If you get one you didn't ask for, it's a scam. To request a real ballot for the November third general election, call the office at eight zero six, three seven nine, twenty-two ninety-nine. The deadline is Friday, October twenty-third.
KELI The counter on that one: most newsrooms will call it voter confusion or a phishing alert and move on. What matters structurally is that mail-in ballot applications are expensive to send, and someone spent money to impersonate a county office to your mailbox. That suggests either a political operation testing response rates or a theft crew building a list. Potter County won't say which yet. Watch the next seventy-two hours — if the county names a suspect or the Sheriff's office files a report, that's your answer.
HAST Staying in Texas, federal prosecutors have filed fraud charges against an unnamed school district and employees in what they're calling a pass-the-trash scheme. The details are thin this morning, but the structure is clear: district officials allegedly moved a credibly accused employee from one school to another instead of firing him, then lied about his history on the paperwork. The feds say someone in that chain filed false statements. That's wire fraud territory, and it carries prison time.
KELI Different front. The Texas data center audit that we've been tracking is generating real confusion now. East Texas officials and state auditors are at odds over what the scope of the review actually covers — whether it's the center's own books or the state's spending decisions on the center. That gap matters because if the audit is narrow, nobody's asking if the state made a bad deal. If it's broad, both sides get exposed. Expect the office of the State Auditor to clarify the mandate in the next week.
HAST Palo Duro football kicks off their season a week from tomorrow against Amarillo High at Dick Bivins Stadium. The Dons are loaded in the senior class this year, and that depth could run deep in the playoffs if the offensive line holds.
KELI Before we close, a history note. In nineteen oh-one, six hundred American school teachers arrived in Manila aboard the USAT Thomas. They were called the Thomasites, and they rebuilt the Philippine education system from the ground up.
