KELI We'll start in Ukraine. Russia launched what President Zelensky called one of the most massive ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv on record. Ukrainian air force figures put the overnight assault at 41 missiles and 125 attack drones fired across the country. One death has been reported in the capital.

HAST The scale matters here. Ukraine has been tracking these attacks for over three years, and the language Zelensky used was not routine. When a wartime leader who has lived through hundreds of strikes reaches for the word "massive," that's a data point worth holding onto.

KELI Still in the region of active conflict and deliberate destruction — Israel has been demolishing a Palestinian home in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank. That's a small community in the South Hebron Hills that has faced a long-running Israeli military campaign of displacement.

HAST The Masafer Yatta demolitions rarely lead international coverage, but analysts tracking the broader Gaza and West Bank situation say they fit a coherent pattern. A separate report this week outlines what those analysts describe as a three-part Israeli strategy in Gaza: establishing settlements, erasing physical infrastructure, and blocking humanitarian recovery — all assessed as serving the goal of making Palestinian return untenable.

KELI On that last point, the settlement expansion and the aid obstruction are on the record through UN monitoring bodies and statements from Israeli officials who have explicitly supported both. The framing of it as a coordinated expulsion strategy is the analytical layer. Those are different things, and it's worth keeping them separate.

HAST Correct. The on-the-record facts are extensive. The intent inference is contested.

KELI In the United States, two recent deaths are drawing attention to racial violence and legal accountability. Nolan Wells and Kohen Wiley, both Black, died in circumstances that civil rights advocates say illustrate a broader retreat from equal protection under law. The Intercept, which carries a left editorial lean, frames their deaths as symptoms of a nation stepping back from any pretense of equal rights.

HAST The structural fact to note is that The Intercept's framing is explicitly editorial. The underlying deaths are on the record. The policy and legal context around both cases — what charges were filed, what wasn't pursued — is where the factual story lives, and that reporting is still developing.

KELI Two maritime disasters this weekend, in different parts of the world. Off the coast of Guyana, a ferry carrying 116 passengers capsized between Georgetown and Port Kaituma. Eight survivors have been rescued so far. In Indonesia, five people were pulled from the water clinging to a fish trap and floating debris — three days after their boat sank. At least twenty people are still missing.

HAST Both incidents share the same structural gap: vessels carrying large numbers of passengers in conditions where search and rescue capacity is limited. The Indonesia survivors were found after three days, which means the missing are still in a survival window, but barely.

KELI From the water to a story about land and who can afford to live on it. In Bozeman, Montana, rents have risen sharply as wealthy out-of-towners, many arriving by private jet, relocate to experience what's being marketed as the American West. Locals report being priced out of trailer parks — which is to say, the most affordable housing tier in the market.

HAST Bozeman is not a unique case; it's a readable example of a dynamic playing out in rural and semi-rural amenity towns across the country. The structural fact coverage often skips: the people being displaced aren't being displaced by a policy. They're being displaced by private capital movement that no local zoning framework was built to absorb at this speed.

KELI Staying with questions of money, politics, and what gets performed in public life. In Colombia, an anti-corruption candidate gained national attention — and a seat in Congress — largely by showing up to government buildings in an elephant costume to highlight what he called wasteful spending. The white elephant is a universal symbol for costly, useless projects. He made it literal.

HAST The story is genuinely unusual, but the underlying dynamic is not. Anti-corruption candidates who use spectacle to cut through institutional noise have a mixed record once in office. The costume gets you the coverage. Governing is a different problem.

KELI UFC middleweight Dricus du Plessis made his return to the octagon this weekend and won by unanimous decision over Kamaru Usman. Du Plessis held the middleweight title from January 2024 until mid-August 2025, when he lost it to Khamzat Chimaev. This win puts him back in contention.

HAST The result is straightforward. What's worth noting for context is that Usman was, not long ago, considered among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. A dominant decision over him is not a soft win.

KELI Finally, in Jerusalem, a paraglider is attempting to protect swifts — migratory birds that have nested in the crevices of the Western Wall for what ornithologists believe is a very long time. Development and maintenance work on surrounding structures have disturbed the nesting sites, and one Israeli pilot is using aerial surveys to document and advocate for the birds before the next migration cycle.

HAST The story is small in scope, but the Western Wall is arguably the most politically and religiously freighted piece of stone on earth. The fact that it also functions as a bird sanctuary — and that someone is quietly trying to keep it that way — is the kind of detail that tends to get edited out of the larger narrative about that place.
