KELI Staying with power and money. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is in a rare public fight with the federal government over nearly ten billion dollars in annual Medicaid funding. The federal government — CMS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — appears to be saying otherwise. Ten billion annually is the entire operating budget for some state systems. Abbott is doubling down, which means either he believes he's going to win this fight or he's willing to absorb a cut that deep. Neither scenario is soft.

HAST Different front now. Democrats are meeting monthly to plan how they'll police Supreme Court justices they say are influenced by dark money and right-wing donors. KELI New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-year moratorium on generative AI for elementary and middle school students — about 600,000 kids in total. No student-facing AI software in those grades. Screen time caps ranging from zero minutes for elementary kids up to 45 minutes a day for middle school. The decision came a week before schools opened.
