KELI From Inkwell, this is the Independent News Drop. It's Saturday, July 25. I'm Keli, with Hast.

KELI We'll start in the Middle East. Yemen's Houthi movement says it struck Saudi Aramco oil facilities along the Red Sea coast. The Houthis announced the targeting themselves; Saudi Arabia and Aramco have not publicly confirmed damage.

HAST Worth noting the geography here. These strikes are aimed at infrastructure on the Saudi side of the Red Sea, which puts them in a different category from the Houthi shipping interdictions that drew so much coverage earlier this year. Targeting Aramco facilities is a direct hit at Saudi export revenue. That escalation hasn't received the same level of Western press attention.

KELI Staying in the region. Iran's foreign ministry summoned Ukrainian diplomats after what Tehran describes as a Ukrainian attack on the Caspian Sea that killed at least one Iranian sailor and wounded another. Ukraine has not publicly claimed the strike.

HAST The Caspian is an enclosed body of water with no outlet to any ocean. Any strike there is operating in a very constrained geographic and diplomatic space, shared among Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan. The diplomacy around this is going to be complicated, and it hasn't been reported out in much depth yet.

KELI To Israel and the occupied West Bank. Israeli forces have intensified raids across the West Bank as settler attacks have also escalated. That dual pressure, military operations from the state and violence from settlers, is documented on the record. The day after a major escalation of settler violence, at least 200 people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against that settler violence. Israeli police arrested nine of them.

HAST The structural fact the coverage tends to separate is that these are two simultaneous tracks happening in the same territory. State military operations and settler violence are legally and politically distinct, but they're operating in the same space at the same time, and the people affected by them are the same people. The protest and the arrests happened inside Israel proper, which is also worth marking.

KELI From Israel to Europe, where two emergencies are running in parallel. Wildfires in France and Spain have forced more than 200,000 people from their homes. At least one person has died in Spain. Conditions are ongoing and the evacuations are not resolved.

HAST 200,000 displaced is a mass displacement event by any measure. The coverage has been consistent but it tends to treat each fire season as a discrete news event rather than examining the pattern across consecutive summers. The structural question of whether emergency response capacity in southern Europe is being built to match a new baseline of fire risk is largely absent from the reporting.

KELI Also in Europe. A vehicle drove into a crowd at an LGBTQ+ event in Germany, killing one person and injuring several others. Berlin police say they are searching for one or two suspects. No arrests have been confirmed publicly as of this recording.

HAST The attack fits a pattern of vehicle-as-weapon incidents at public gatherings that authorities across Europe have been tracking for years. The suspect or suspects are still at large, so the motive is not established on the record. We'll note it and stay accurate.

KELI One more story before we close. A prison in Cameroon called New Bell has become the site of an unlikely music operation. Inmates record songs and music videos from inside the facility and have built a following outside the jail.

HAST It's unusual as a story because it doesn't fit the standard frame for prison coverage, which tends to focus on conditions or policy. This is about what people construct inside those conditions. Worth a read on its own terms.
