Trump Floated UV Light Inside the Body. The Press Called It 'Inject Bleach.' The Misquote Gave the White House Its Exit.

TRUMP · APRIL 23, 2020 · COVID / MEDICAL

TRUMP
"Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light... Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning?"
What happened

DHS Undersecretary William Bryan presented real research: UV light and heat significantly reduced coronavirus survival on surfaces. Trump riffed on whether those effects could be brought inside the body. Dr. Birx looked away. The next day Trump said he was 'being sarcastic.' There is no indication in the tape that he was.

What the press did with it

The story collapsed into 'Trump suggests injecting bleach.' Bleach was never mentioned. The 'bleach' framing was vivid, shareable, and partially wrong — which is precisely what the WH needed. McEnany said he was 'taken out of context.' She was technically correct on the bleach point. That narrow correctness let the incident be re-litigated as media distortion. The DHS research was never examined.

The question that didn't get asked

Far-UVC light research for killing airborne pathogens is a real field. Trump clearly knew none of this — he was free-associating off a slide deck. But the 'bleach injection' framing preemptively closed the question. The coverage was more satisfying than it was thorough. The WH got a gift.
